Edgar Stiles is a badger who works the overnight monitoring desk at ZSI's Crisis Coordination Center. He is introduced in the W-Series in "The Call", where he is three-quarters through a crossword when the weather-wall grid goes red.

Background

Stiles has worked the overnight for six years. His job is to notice when a number moves, which on the night of the false alarm means writing down, over and over, that it does not.

Personality

Stripped to information on the radio, patient with the log, and slower to hand over his trust than anyone else on the floor: when the map goes green he waits a moment longer than the room does before he believes it. He knows what a bad feed sounds like, and knows this one is not behaving like one.

Series History

W-Series

In "The Call", Stiles is the mammal at the desk when every light on the holographic map turns red at once, and he looks up from seven across, six letters, "persistent illusion," with the square still blank. He calls the accumulation and the projected release window across the floor, takes the CTU breach team's readings of the station's alarm panel down word for word, again and again, and answers Yassir's question about whether the mammals standing in the station can shut it down: Agnes De'Snake's controls are in the sealed chamber beneath the lighthouse, under concrete since the district was restored, and the surface station is only a readout. When Yassir asks whether the feed itself could be bad, he tells her a bad feed answers its radio. At the stand-down, once the map is green and he has decided to trust it, he picks up the pen that has been lying beside the paper all hour and fills in MIRAGE.

Key Relationships

Nadia Yassir

She stands behind his chair while the monitoring desk calls the station and waits for the one answer that does not come; he is the mammal she turns to for what the machine can and cannot be told.

Trivia

  • Edgar Stiles takes his name from Edgar Stiles, the CTU analyst in the television series 24. Fellow Crisis Coordination Center staff Bill Buchanan, Chloe O'Brian and Nadia Yassir are drawn from the same series.
