Conrad Salt is a gray wolf and financial consultant in We Can Fix Pawbert, and the murder victim at the center of the W-Series episode "Bitter".

Background

Salt is in his early fifties, silver threading the fur at his muzzle, and lives alone on the top floor of a twenty-four-story tower on Winddancer Avenue, a Downtown address with a concierge desk and key-card elevators. His housekeeper, Mrs. Bucket, cleans Wednesdays and Fridays. Three years before his death he used his consulting firm's freight account to import raw cacao for Scarlett Beauregarde, a porcupine chocolatier working outside the licensing system, and took thirty percent of her operation for it.

Personality

The apartment is staged for visitors and kept up by staff. He works late, reads late, and eats generously and without hesitating โ€” a habit his killer counts on. When a venture requiring clean books comes along he prices his own exit at ninety thousand dollars and threatens to give the regulator Beauregarde's records if it goes unpaid.

Series History

W-Series

In "Bitter", Mrs. Bucket lets herself in at quarter past seven and finds Salt cold in his armchair, a whiskey beside him and a gold-foil box of Furrero chocolates half eaten on the side table. Dr. Palmer, the Precinct 1 medical examiner, orders a priority toxicology panel on the strength of a cyanosis pattern that does not fit an infarction.

The panel returns lethal levels of theobromine, and the chocolates carry no pawburin marker, meaning they never passed through a licensed detoxification process. Furrero confirms the box is counterfeit. Luther, Nick, and Judy follow the supply chain to a customs search, and the only freight account importing raw cacao to a residential address in the city turns out to be Salt's own. Beauregarde sent him twenty-four truffles of her strongest dark, knowing he would need to eat fewer than half.

Key Relationships

Scarlett Beauregarde

He built the import channel that made her workshop possible and took a third of what it earned; she built the box that killed him out of the same trust in packaging that made the arrangement work.

Trivia

  • Salt is named for Veruca Salt of Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory; several characters in the episode carry Wonka-derived names. The surname doubles as a chocolate flavor note.
