Derek Morgan is a cheetah and a member of the ZSI-BAU (Behavioral Analysis Unit). He works the investigative side of the unit's cases alongside Garcia and leads its tactical entries.

"Keep him safe." โ€” Derek Morgan

Background

Derek Morgan is the BAU's primary tactical operator โ€” the mammal who bridges the gap between behavioral analysis and physical action. While his colleagues profile and strategize, Morgan is the one who kicks in doors. His combination of physical capability and psychological training makes him uniquely effective in crisis situations where both speed and judgment are required.

Personality

Morgan is direct, protective, and action-oriented. He channels his intensity into purpose, moving with the confidence of a mammal who has breached more doors than he can count and brought more mammals home alive than dead. His protective instincts are fierce, and they outlast the operation: he does not leave a protected witness behind without handing the responsibility to someone by name.

He is emotionally present without being sentimental, and his physicality is matched by genuine warmth toward the mammals he works to protect.

History

Season 1: Quietus and I Choose to Stay (S01E17-18)

Morgan arrives with the ZSI-BAU on the witness-suicide case and is paired with Nick to interview the guards who processed the dead witnesses. When that produces nothing, the two of them end up in the precinct tech room with Garcia, who establishes that Mawl has left no address, no traceable line, and nothing in his old data worth chasing. Morgan is the one who turns the dead end into a plan: if the only way to place him is a live call, the unit has to make him call.

In "I Choose to Stay" Morgan waits at Site Two as grab-team lead while Pawbert holds Mawl on the line. Once the trace locks a Meadowlands address he takes the team out, confirms the perimeter with ZPD backup, and kicks in the third-floor apartment door himself, arresting Mawl on three counts of murder plus witness tampering and psychological coercion resulting in death.

He comes back to Site Two after Mawl is booked. As the BAU files out, Morgan claps Luther on the shoulder and asks him to keep Pawbert safe. Luther tells him to count on it.

Season 2: The Cartographer (S02E11)

Morgan returns with the BAU to investigate the Cartographer serial killer (Orin Draftwell), a former Lynxley contractor dumping bodies at old Lynxley sites. Morgan leads the tactical arrest at Draftwell's workshop in the Nocturnal District, breaching the door and securing the suspect.

Season 5: Profile (S05E14)

Morgan returns with the full BAU team during the Icener crisis in "Profile". His only appearance is the unit's opening briefing, where he stands behind Garcia in the technical analysis lab with his arms crossed while she compiles her timing analysis, a paw resting on the back of her chair. He says nothing for the whole scene, and he is not among the profilers who go down to the CCC for Costa's briefing.

Season 5: Final Position (S05E21)

In "Final Position", Morgan joins the west team during the multi-agency assault on The Root, serving as the BAU's tactical operator during the operation that ends the Icener crisis.

W-Series

In "Nighthowler", Morgan goes forward with Luther's element on the Sandy Ridge raid so that the BAU's profile is in an operator's ear and not only on a briefing screen. He turns it into targeting over comms before the breach: the stationary signatures upstairs are the inner core and will not move, the eight on the ground floor are loyal to the leader rather than to the compound, and the leader is the one who is not shooting. Inside, he runs the push to the lab door alongside Luther, drives a mezzanine shooter back behind the railing, and identifies the gray fox handler across the floor as the leader Rossi profiled. He is a step behind Luther when the lab opens on the compound. When Luther turns, Morgan comes through the door at a sprint and gets his arms around him from behind, and Luther reverses it with a close-quarters technique Morgan recognizes from ZSI's advanced operator school, the one that flips the smaller restrainer over the larger restrained. Morgan goes down hard, rolls clear winded, and names the problem the room now has: the training is still running. He is back on his feet with a paw against his ribs by the time Luther is gone.

Key Relationships

Penelope Garcia

Morgan and Garcia work the same cases from opposite ends, he on the ground and she at the screens, whether she is on a video link from ZSI or set up in a room down the hall. His trust in her technical abilities is absolute, and his standing instruction to her is to stay focused, which she never quite manages and he never seriously expects.

Emily Prentiss

Morgan operates under Prentiss's command, his tactical skills deployed according to the Unit Chief's strategic direction.
