S0WE10 - Nighthowler

"Nighthowler" is the tenth episode of the W-Series and the second Epic Track A (convergence) episode, following "Recruit Grumpiski". Luther is hit by a modified Nighthowler compound during a warehouse raid and goes feral, triggering a city-wide pursuit across a compressed twelve-hour timeline. The episode converges nearly every crossover team in the series on a single Meadowlands field as the regression deadline passes and Pawbert walks unarmed into a line of fire to reach his husband.

Synopsis

A predator-species ideological cell operating out of Sandy Ridge has refined a modified Nighthowler variant for aerosol deployment against the city's transit infrastructure. During the breach operation to neutralize the cell, Luther is exposed to the compound via a fragment strike and goes feral. He escapes the warehouse on all fours and runs north through the city, beating every containment team deployed against him while calling Pawbert's name. The ZSI lab determines the compound has a twelve-hour permanent-regression window. The deadline is four in the morning.

Plot

The episode opens at midday with Luther and Pawbert on the phone, planning an evening of mushroom risotto and each other. Luther's ZSI secure phone interrupts. At the CCC, Director Costa briefs Luther alongside the BAU's profilers; Reid presents the signals intelligence on the Sandy Ridge cell and Rossi delivers the behavioral profile, identifying the group as ideological true believers who want to prove that Zootopia's coexistence experiment is denial. The operation is planned and briefed at Precinct 1 within the hour.

The breach at Sandy Ridge in the late afternoon is a full joint operation: Luther commanding Alpha element from inside, Bauer on CTU tactical from outside, Bradford and Chen on the perimeter. The warehouse has been fortified, and the firefight is a three-dimensional problem. The cell is neutralized — nine in custody, two dead — and the lab is secured, revealing enough refined Nighthowler compound for a mass-exposure event. While cataloguing the lab, Luther notices a blue-purple stain spreading from a point on his upper arm. A fragment from the firefight carried the compound. He tries to reach his radio and fails.

Nick finds Luther against the wall with his eyes shifting to amber and his claws extending involuntarily. Luther howls Pawbert's name in frequencies below speech, fights off Bradford, Chen, Morgan, and Bauer, bites Nick on the neck, and escapes the warehouse on all fours into the late afternoon. Bauer issues a Code Feral: non-lethal only, he is one of theirs.

Dr. Jemma Simmons at ZSI's biological threat division delivers the analysis to the CCC: modified variant, twelve-hour regression window, deadline at zero-four-hundred. The standard antidote is ineffective; bespoke synthesis will take hours.

The tracking operation follows Luther's northbound bearing through the city on Garcia's screens while Pawbert waits at the mansion in the green sweater. Bradford and Chen engage at the Sage Wash and are beaten — Luther on four legs changes every angle their biped training assumes. Jake and Rosa engage at Ficus Grove; Luther nearly bites Jake before Rosa drives him off. Rosa names it from the pavement: that is a mammal trying to get somewhere.

At half past midnight, Pawbert texts Lane. Lane arrives with Brim, makes proper coffee with a french press he finds behind the mansion's unused toaster, and sits. Pawbert breaks down — the first full emotional collapse since Luther's coding in the main series — and Lane holds him through it. Brim puts one tiny paw on Pawbert's forearm and offers to make the next coffee. Maris calls at quarter past one; she and Harlan are going directly to the hospital.

Jake calls Nick at two in the morning with the realization that changes everything: the regression line on Garcia's screen points at the mansion. Luther is trying to get home.

Reacher's team deploys to the Meadowlands boundary at two-thirty. Luther emerges from the oaks on all fours, physically degraded but operationally precise. O'Donnell attempts a wolf submission vocalization; Luther drives through him without hesitation. The fight escalates. Tranquilizer darts accelerate Luther's heart rate into cardiac damage range. At zero-four-hundred, the twelve-hour deadline passes with the antidote still in synthesis. Costa authorizes lethal force as a last resort. Reacher, Nick, and Judy refuse. ZPD officers on the perimeter open fire.

Lane's car arrives as the shots crack across the field. Pawbert puts himself between the guns and Luther, faces the officers until the shooting stops, then turns and walks across the open field toward a feral wolf. Luther lunges, pins him, and freezes with his claws pressing into the green sweater. Pawbert says "I'm here" and then the private name. Luther's nose finds the wool that smells like home, and from underneath twelve hours of chemistry designed to erase him, he says the only two words the serum couldn't reach: "Paw" and "always."

The antidote is confirmed fifteen minutes past the deadline. Station 118 administers it on the field. Luther slips into unconsciousness with his face pressed into the green sweater. At the hospital, the ZSI lab warns that neural rewriting may have progressed beyond reversal. Pawbert refuses to prepare for anything except his husband waking up. Rossi arrives and tells Pawbert that the word Luther found under the chemistry is in the place words cannot go — it is not damaged. While Rossi and Pawbert sit together in the corridor, the ICU door opens: Luther is awake and asking for his husband.

The episode ends in Luther's hospital room with the entire group present. Luther asks if Pawbert is okay — exactly as Rossi predicted. Pawbert pulls the green sweater off one-armed, refusing to release Luther's paw, and drapes it across Luther's chest. "Always?" / "Always." The room is warm. The morning continues.

The song is the feral body's drive given language it could not produce itself. For twelve hours, Luther moves on a sustained northbound bearing through camera-dark zones and open fields, heading home without the neurology to articulate why. The song speaks in the voice the serum took from him — a plea to belong to someone who can save you from what you've become.

The source resonance is structural. In The Lost Boys (1987 film; 2023 stage musical), a character is turned into a predator against his will, and the story becomes a race against permanent transformation while family fights to pull him back. The WCFP parallel runs on identical architecture: a compound turns Luther feral with a twelve-hour window before the regression locks; the antidote must be synthesized before the clock expires; and love — Pawbert's presence on the field, the word "always" dragged from underneath the chemistry — is the tether that keeps him from being lost.
