"Nighthowler" is the tenth episode of the W-Series and its second Epic — the first on Track A (convergence) — following "Recruit Grumpiski". A warehouse raid leaves Luther exposed to a modified Nighthowler compound, and he goes feral in front of his own team. The lab gives the city twelve hours to bring him back before the change becomes permanent. The pursuit crosses the city over a single night and pulls in nearly every crossover team in the series, while Pawbert waits at the mansion for a phone that keeps ringing with the same news.

Synopsis

Signals intelligence flags a predator-species cell in the Sandy Ridge industrial belt refining a modified Nighthowler compound for aerosol release into Zootopia's transit infrastructure. Costa hands the behavioral profile to the BAU and the operation to Luther and CTU field commander Bauer, and the joint breach that afternoon takes the warehouse — nine in custody, two dead, the lab and its dispersal framework secured. Cataloging the bench, Luther finds a blue-purple stain spreading from a fragment wound on his upper arm. He turns feral in front of Nick, fights through every mammal in the room, bites Nick on the neck, and leaves on four legs. ZSI biochemist Jemma Simmons puts a twelve-hour permanent-regression window on the variant and the deadline at four in the morning. The standard antidote will not bind, so the lab starts building a new one. Luther runs north through the night and beats Bradford and Chen at the Sage Wash, then Jake and Rosa at Ficus Grove, while Pawbert waits at the mansion with Lane and Brim. Jake works out that the track points at the pack's house. Reacher's team intercepts at the Meadowlands boundary, where tranquilizer fire only damages Luther's heart further. The window closes with the antidote unfinished and Costa authorizes lethal force. Officers fire, and Pawbert walks into the lane and then across the open field. Luther pins him, catches the scent of the green sweater, and finds his name. The antidote reaches the field fifteen minutes late, and it works.

Plot

The episode opens at midday with Luther and Pawbert on the phone, planning an evening of mushroom risotto and each other. Luther's ZSI secure phone interrupts. At the CCC, Costa briefs Luther with Prentiss and two of her profilers in the room. Reid presents the signals intelligence on the Sandy Ridge cell and puts the group less than twenty-four hours from operational readiness; Rossi delivers the behavioral profile, and his read is that these are ideological true believers who want to prove Zootopia's coexistence experiment is denial. Prentiss closes and assigns her agents to the operation. The plan is briefed at Precinct 1 within the hour.

The breach at Sandy Ridge in the late afternoon is a full joint operation: Luther commanding Alpha element from inside, Bauer on CTU tactical from outside, Bradford and Chen on the exterior perimeter with Grey and the Precinct 7 squads. The warehouse has been fortified, and the firefight is a three-dimensional problem. The cell is neutralized — nine in custody, two dead — and the lab is secured, revealing enough refined Nighthowler compound for a mass-exposure event. While cataloging the lab, Luther notices a blue-purple stain spreading from a point on his upper arm. A fragment from the firefight carried the compound. He tries to reach his radio and fails.

Nick finds Luther against the wall with his eyes shifting to amber and his claws extending involuntarily. Luther howls Pawbert's name in frequencies below speech, fights off Bradford, Chen, Morgan, and Bauer, bites Nick on the neck, and escapes the warehouse on all fours into the late afternoon. Bauer broadcasts a Code Feral: no lethal force, the subject is one of their own.

Dr. Jemma Simmons at ZSI's biological threat division delivers the analysis to the CCC: modified variant, twelve-hour regression window, deadline at zero-four-hundred. The standard antidote is ineffective; bespoke synthesis will take hours.

The tracking operation follows Luther's northbound bearing through the city on Garcia's screens while Pawbert waits at the mansion in the green sweater. Bradford and Chen engage at the Sage Wash and are beaten — Luther on four legs changes every angle their biped training assumes. Jake and Rosa engage at Ficus Grove; Luther nearly bites Jake before Rosa drives him off. Picking herself up afterward, Rosa reads the encounter as travel rather than aggression.

At half past midnight, Pawbert texts Lane. Lane arrives with Brim, finds a french press behind the toaster that has sat unused since the day it was bought, makes proper coffee, and sits. Pawbert breaks down — his first collapse of this kind since Luther's four codes — and Lane holds him through it. Brim puts one tiny paw on Pawbert's forearm and offers to make the next coffee. Maris calls at quarter past one; she and Harlan are going directly to the hospital.

At two in the morning, Jake phones Nick. He has been turning Rosa's read over since Ficus Grove, and he has matched it against the map: every leg of the northbound run on Garcia's screen ends at the pack's own house.

Reacher's team deploys to the Meadowlands boundary at two-thirty. Luther comes out of the tree line on four legs, physically degraded but operationally precise. O'Donnell attempts a wolf submission vocalization; Luther drives through him without hesitation. The fight escalates. Perimeter officers with tranquilizer rifles push Luther's heart to the edge of cardiac damage before Dixon and Bauer get them lowered. At zero-four-hundred, the twelve-hour deadline passes with the antidote still in synthesis. Costa authorizes lethal force as a last resort. Reacher, Nick, and Judy refuse. Two ZPD officers on the perimeter break and open fire.

Lane's car arrives as the shots crack across the field. Pawbert puts himself between the guns and Luther, faces the officers until the shooting stops, then turns and walks across the open field toward a feral wolf. Luther lunges, pins him, and freezes with his claws pressing into the green sweater. Pawbert tells him where he is, and then he uses Luther's private name. Luther's nose finds the wool that smells like home, and from underneath twelve hours of chemistry built to erase them, he produces Pawbert's name and their promise — always — and then collapses into his husband's arms.

The antidote is confirmed fifteen minutes past the deadline. Station 118 runs it onto the field: Chimney carries the case, Hen finds the injection site, Eddie steadies the arm wolf-to-wolf with O'Donnell kneeling beside him, and Buck brings the stretcher. Luther slips into unconsciousness with his face pressed into the green sweater. At Zootopia General, Simmons warns that the rewriting may already have gone too deep to undo, and that Pawbert should prepare for a husband who does not come back the same. Pawbert refuses to prepare for anything except Luther waking up. Rossi arrives and tells him that the word Luther found under the chemistry sits in the place words cannot go and is not damaged. While the two of them sit in the corridor, ICU attending Cristina Yang opens the door: Luther is awake and asking for his husband.

The episode ends in Luther's hospital room with the whole group present. Luther asks whether Pawbert is okay, exactly as Rossi predicted, and processes what he can remember, which stops at the firefight and resumes as fragments. Maris refuses to hear him apologize for a thing that was inflicted on him, Harlan tells him they are proud of him, and Nick turns the bite into material rather than let Luther apologize for it. Pawbert pulls the green sweater off one-armed, refusing to release Luther's paw, and drapes it across Luther's chest. Pawbert asks their question and Luther answers it: always. Morning light has reached the edge of the bed by then.

The Lost Boys is a story about someone turned into a predator against his will, with a clock on how long that can still be undone and a family that refuses to give him up. The song is his — a plea for a home and for rescue from himself. This episode is built the same way: a compound rewrites Luther in a warehouse, and a lab gives the city twelve hours to get him back. The title names the part the chemistry never reached. Luther runs all night on a single bearing with no way left to say why, and the answer is that he belongs to someone — which is why every leg of the route points at his own house, and why the private name and always are what surface when Pawbert walks into the field.
