Smitty is introduced at Precinct 1 during an inter-precinct exchange day in "Fur Your Eyes Only". While the other visiting officers are paired off for patrol, he separates from the group and makes his own unhurried way to the evidence desk, and works there the whole day: one item at a time, chain of custody intact, at a pace nobody manages to rush him out of.
The personal effects bag from Judy's traffic stop in the Canal District holds a wallet, keys, a phone, and a rubber-banded stack of photographs. Smitty lays the photographs out and reads them slowly. They are all interiors of some large institution, concrete and flat overhead light, the kind of building that could as easily be a school or a hospital, and he goes through them one by one until one of them stops him. He carries it to the lamp, identifies it as the break room at the Zootopia Correctional Facility, and places himself in that room a month earlier for a deposition. It is the one thing about the stack that nobody else in the building could have supplied.
Nick, drifting past with a coffee, has the rest of it inside a sentence: the whole set is prison corridors, shot from varying angles and in varying sections, and a petty thief has no business carrying surveillance photographs of the facility where Pawbert is serving his sentence. By then Smitty's slow voice has turned worried on its own account. He raises no alarm and asks for nothing; he simply names a room correctly, and the case turns toward the prison.
Season 5
In "Strike", a van bomb at Precinct 1 kills three officers and shatters Chief Bogo's left leg. Smitty is at his desk at Precinct 7, where Grey has the building at high alert and security sweeps running. Told to manually verify the identity of every mammal who signed in that morning, Smitty reaches for the log and gets to it.
