S03E02 - Fur Your Eyes Only

"Fur Your Eyes Only" is the second episode of Season 3 of We Can Fix Pawbert and a Rookie (Precinct 7) crossover episode. It runs the day after "Licence to Claw" and moves to Nick and Judy, who spend an inter-precinct exchange day paired with Precinct 7 officers while Pawbert waits on an answer to the report he filed inside the prison. A routine traffic stop puts a frightened porcupine and a stack of unexplained photographs into Precinct 1's evidence room.

Synopsis

Nick Wilde and Judy Hopps watch a ZNN broadcast on new charges against former mayor Leodore Lionheart and the recaptured Dawn Bellwether, then report to Precinct 1 for an exchange day with Precinct 7. Chief Bogo pairs Nick with Lucy Chen and Judy with John Nolan and his rookie, Celina Juarez, leaves Tim Bradford coordinating, and departs for a ceremony at City Hall. Nick talks a desperate raccoon shoplifter into surrendering at a Savanna Central convenience store while Chen holds the exit and cuffs him. In the Canal District, Judy stops a porcupine named Quillford on outstanding warrants and sees he is frightened far beyond his charges. Nolan later tells Judy he asked Pawbert Lynxley whether he could use his first name, and Judy names what that meant to him. Smitty, a Precinct 7 evidence officer, recognizes a break room at Zootopia Correctional Facility among Quillford's photographs; Nick identifies the rest as prison corridors. Quillford admits he was paid cash to deliver them to someone inside Precinct 1, then realizes he is a target. Bradford advises letting him sit an hour. Nick and Judy return to find him dead, an acrid trace in the air and a two-minute gap in the camera feed that puts the killer inside Precinct 1. They set out for City Hall. That evening at the prison, Officer Kett tells Pawbert the warden dismissed his report as contraband, an inmate taunts him for snitching, and Pawbert writes in his notebook that no one is listening.

Plot

Nick and Judy start the morning in their apartment with ZNN running behind them. The broadcast covers sentencing reviews for high-profile inmates at Zootopia Correctional Facility, including additional charges against former mayor Leodore Lionheart out of the post-Lynxley investigations, then moves to Dawn Bellwether's recapture at Outback Island Terminal. Nick stops mid-pour to watch the old footage of Lionheart being led away in cuffs, and the deflection he usually reaches for is not there. Judy asks if he is all right. He tells her he does not like mammals who cast themselves as saviors, and leaves it at that. The Bellwether item goes down easier, and they trade the story of the terminal chase until his arms uncross. Then Judy calls the day: exchange day, and Chief Bogo wants them early.

At Precinct 1, Clawhauser greets them from the front desk, still wounded that he offered Bradford a donut and got nothing back but a stare. Precinct 7's officers are easy to pick out of the lobby. Bradford stands with his arms crossed, pressed and unimpressed. Chen reads the room's exits out of professional habit. Nolan talks his rookie, Juarez, through the ways their precinct handles things differently, and Smitty moves off toward the evidence desk without waiting to be told. Bogo pairs Nick with Chen and Judy with Nolan and Juarez, leaves Bradford coordinating from the house, tells Nick specifically not to embarrass him, and leaves for a ceremony at City Hall.

Nick and Chen have worked together twice before, on the Kellan Slink takedown and at Mole Harbor, and they spend the drive through Savanna Central testing each other's edges. A dispatch call sends them to Whisker Mart, where a young raccoon has stuffed his jacket and frozen between the counter and the cruiser outside. Nick talks rather than chases. Chen has the door, she is faster than he is, and nobody has to have a bad day over this. What comes out of the jacket is canned food and a folded blanket. Chen cuffs him without any roughness while Nick tells him where the shelters are. Waiting on a tow truck at a fender-bender afterward, Chen tells Nick that what he did at the store was not soft but efficient, and asks whether he thinks about where a mammal like that comes from. He says he does, and that it has never once helped.

Judy runs the Canal District with Nolan beside her and Juarez leaning between the seats, deflecting hero-worship about rhinos and skyscrapers and the Night Howler case. A call flags a sedan whose plates have come back on outstanding warrants. The driver is a porcupine named Quillford with an outdated license, a petty theft charge, and a failure to appear, and he steps out when he is told to. What Judy notices is that his fear points somewhere past the three officers in front of him, at something a traffic stop does not account for. She says nothing about it and does not forget it. Juarez finds a bag of personal effects in the sedan, and Judy tells her to log all of it.

Back at Precinct 1, Judy takes coffee with Nolan and he asks after Pawbert. She tells him Pawbert is steady, with eight months left. Nolan remembers him from the investigation into Clawrence as someone who had worked out who he meant to be, and repeats the line he gave him during the Kellan Slink case. He also mentions asking permission to call him Pawbert instead of Lynxley, and that the answer was yes. Judy tells him what that would have meant on the other end of the question.

In evidence processing, Smitty opens Quillford's effects and finds a wallet, keys, a phone, and a stack of photographs bound with a rubber band. He spreads them out, holds one up to the lamp, and names it: the break room at Zootopia Correctional Facility, where he sat for a deposition the previous month. Nick has drifted over with a coffee and looks again at the rest of the stack. Once Smitty has said it, the pattern is obvious. All of them are institutional corridors under the same lighting, shot from different angles and different sections of the same building. A mammal booked for petty theft has been carrying surveillance of a prison, and Nick calls for Judy.

Quillford gives up everything he knows in interrogation, which is not much. Somebody large and brown-furred, seen in the dark, paid him cash for a delivery he never completed because the stop came first. The drop was supposed to go to someone at Precinct 1, and he never got a name. Chen watches from the door and Bradford watches through the glass. Partway through his own answer, Quillford works out what being the only mammal who can describe the buyer makes him. Out in the hallway Bradford calls it an inside job, and Nick narrows it to someone with access to prison intelligence. Chen wants Bogo, who is still at his ceremony, so Bradford rules that they work with what they have and leave Quillford alone for an hour to let the pressure build before a second pass. Nick does not like it and agrees to it.

An hour later Quillford is dead in the chair. Judy goes for a pulse and does not find one. The air holds a faint acrid bitterness, nothing in the room has been disturbed, and the camera feed runs two minutes of static before it picks back up. Two minutes was enough for someone to enter a sealed interrogation room in the middle of a working precinct, kill the only lead in the case, and walk back out wearing a badge. The six of them confer in a hallway out of earshot of the bullpen. Nolan calls the inside job verified, Chen points out that Quillford was about to give them a name, and Bradford draws the obvious conclusion that whoever did it knows they are looking. Bogo will not be back for hours, so Bradford turns back to hold the scene while Nick and Judy leave for City Hall to reach him in person.

That evening at the prison, Officer Kett sits down across from Pawbert in the protective custody common area, where the novel Judy brought him on Wednesday lies open and unread. The report went up the chain and came back as probably contraband. Kett explains that the new warden has been unsteady since Warden Hartwell died during the extraction, and jumpy about the wrong things. He believes Pawbert, and he cannot make anyone above him care. Walking back to his cell, Pawbert takes a taunt about snitches from behind a neighboring door without breaking stride, because the word stopped landing on him a long time ago. In the cell he leaves the shelf alone, the photograph and the letters both, and writes the Day 123 entry instead: reported, threatened, dismissed, and the jackal guard who passed him in the corridor and smiled. He writes that he is finished being a mammal who looks away. Across the facility in A-Block, Luther is awake too.
