S03E02 - Fur Your Eyes Only
"Fur Your Eyes Only" is the second episode of Season 3 of We Can Fix Pawbert and a Rookie (Precinct 7) crossover episode. It serves as the Nick/Judy-focused POV episode in the three-part Convergence structure.
Synopsis
Nick Wilde and Judy Hopps host a cross-training exchange day at Precinct 1 with Precinct 7 officers. A routine arrest leads to the discovery of professional surveillance photographs of ZCF corridors, and the courier is murdered in police custody during a two-minute camera gap -- confirming an inside operative at Precinct 1.
Plot
Nick Wilde and Judy Hopps begin their day in their small apartment, watching ZNN coverage of new charges against former Mayor Leodore Lionheart and the recapture of Dawn Bellwether. Nick's reaction to Lionheart is sharp—the lion who locked up sick mammals without trials and called it protection, now facing additional consequences. The news shifts to Bellwether's recapture at Outback Island Terminal, and Nick's mood lightens, remembering the chaos of the luggage cart chase.
At Precinct 1, officers from Precinct 7 arrive for a cross-training exchange day. Tim Bradford surveys the room with barely-concealed judgment. Lucy Chen catalogs exits and threats by professional habit. John Nolan chats with his new rookie, Celina Juarez, a coati with intuitive observational skills. Smitty, a sloth, settles into evidence processing. Chief Bogo assigns partnerships—Nick with Chen, Judy with Nolan and Juarez—and departs for a ceremony at City Hall.
Nick and Chen patrol Savanna Central, their dynamic evolving from mutual assessment to grudging respect. Chen is direct about Nick's past as a con artist, and Nick appreciates the lack of pretense. They handle a convenience store shoplifter—a desperate raccoon stealing canned food and socks—with efficiency, Nick talking him down without a chase. Meanwhile, Judy patrols the Canal District with Nolan and Juarez, fielding hero-worship questions about her Night Howler case exploits. A routine traffic stop nets Quillford, a porcupine with outstanding warrants for petty theft and failure to appear. The fear in him seems disproportionate to his crimes.
Back at Precinct 1, Smitty processes Quillford's personal effects. Among the items is a stack of photographs bound with a rubber band. Smitty recognizes one immediately—the break room at ZCF, where he was last month for a deposition. Nick, drawn by curiosity, examines the rest. All institutional corridors. All prison architecture. Different angles, different sections—professional surveillance of Zootopia Correctional Facility.
In interrogation, Quillford crumbles under pressure. He admits he was hired by someone big, paid cash, told to deliver the photos to someone inside Precinct 1. He doesn't know the recipient's name. He didn't ask questions. The realization hits him mid-sentence: he's the loose end now. Bradford suggests letting him stew for an hour—pressure works better when it has time to build.
When Nick and Judy return after the hour, Quillford is dead. Slumped in his chair. Not sleeping—gone. The air carries a faint chemical trace. Fast-acting. Minimal evidence. The camera feed shows a two-minute gap of static. Someone walked into a secure interrogation room in the middle of a precinct in broad daylight, killed their only lead, and walked out. Someone with precinct access. Someone wearing a badge.
The episode's tag shifts to Pawbert's perspective at ZCF. Officer Kett finds him in the PC common area and delivers disappointing news: the new warden dismissed Pawbert's report about the suspicious paper exchange as routine contraband. Kett is frustrated—he believes Pawbert saw something real, but he cannot make the administration listen. As Pawbert walks back to his cell, a voice drifts from a neighboring cell: snitches don't get invited to parties. That night, Pawbert opens his STAY notebook and writes his Day 123 entry—reporting something, being dismissed, missing Luther. The episode ends with the same parallel structure as E01: Pawbert in his cell thinking of Luther, unaware a wolf is thinking the same thing twenty feet away.
