S0WE15 - Coup

"Coup" is the fifteenth episode of the W-Series and the third Epic Track B (feature) episode. The pack's vacation in Naypyipaw, a Southeast Asian nation, is cut short when the military seizes the government overnight. Stripped of weapons, credentials, and communications, the four must cross the country on foot and reach the lawless port island of Madripaw for extraction. The episode is set entirely outside Zootopia and is the first W-Series episode where the ZSI/ZPD apparatus is completely absent until the final act.

Synopsis

Judy chose Naypyipaw after spotting a billboard from the carpool. The pack's first morning is spent at temples and a riverside restaurant before a military coup topples the government on live television. With the embassy district already secured and communications down, Luther directs the pack south toward Madripaw. Over three days and two nights, the pack navigates checkpoints, firefights, and a coordinated military search, surviving through a rotation of each member's core skill set: Luther's tactical training, Nick's hustler instincts, Judy's navigational intelligence, and Pawbert's compassion for the civilians caught in the collapse. A civilian resistance network, fed by every act of kindness the pack performs, ultimately rescues them from a gunpoint execution.

Plot

The episode opens with the pack in their hotel suite on the first morning of vacation. Pawbert watches the market from the window. Luther has already mapped the hotel's exits. Judy has color-coded the itinerary. Nick is horizontal on a chaise with a guidebook he has not opened. The hotel's innkeeper, a sun bear named Paul, gives them restaurant recommendations and local advice with the warmth of a mammal who loves his city.

They visit the Shwe Pawgoda, eat mohinga at a riverside restaurant where the fishing cat owner shares her grandmother's broth recipe with Pawbert, and return to the hotel in the afternoon as the tropical heat overwhelms Luther's wolf thermoregulation. That evening, while channel-surfing, Nick settles on a fitness program where a sun bear instructor leads stretches on a wide boulevard. Behind her, armored vehicles roll into frame. The instructor finishes her routine and walks off camera. The boulevard fills with military vehicles. The broadcast cuts to a title card: the Naypyipaw Defense Council announces temporary administrative authority.

Communications die within minutes. Luther destroys his ZSI laptop using the Zeroize protocol and physically smashes the SSD. The pack evacuates through the hotel's service corridor, a route Luther walked on their first evening. Paul stays behind with his guests. The embassy district, their first destination, has already been bombed and evacuated. Luther redirects south toward Madripaw.

The escape across the city is a ladder of escalating obstacles. At the first military checkpoint, Nick talks the pack through using forty kyat and the body language of a mammal who is not worth the paperwork. A civet market vendor, part of the civilian resistance network, agrees to relay a coded ZSI message through a whisper chain. Luther activates a sealed emergency card, reads the one-time code, and eats the card. Pawbert defies Luther's order to keep moving when he spots a water buffalo mother hiding with her calves; he provides crisis support while she reciprocates with intelligence about an unsecured river crossing. Judy crawls through a collapsed building's drainage pipe to unlock a gate from the other side. Nick and Judy cross a loading yard inside a cardboard box while a guard investigates and walks away.

On Day 2, the pack witnesses a temple through morning smoke and passes through a village where soldiers are assaulting civilians. The pack intervenes in a fight that is ugly, close-quarters, and unarmed — Luther fighting a gaur, Judy hitting a tiger's knee from behind, Nick improvising with a board. Pawbert tends to the victims while Luther watches from the alley mouth. Afterward, Nick's humor engine fails for the first time when he sees a child's sleeping mat inside a destroyed house. At a bridge checkpoint, Nick sits in the dust and talks a young tiger through to mercy. During the second night in a barn, Luther accepts Pawbert's care without argument and makes his first joke in two days.

On Day 3, the military actively hunts the pack with a coordinated three-vehicle sweep following the village soldiers' report. The pack is caught at a narrows by a unit of banteng, leopards, and an elephant. The soldiers discover Luther and Pawbert's matching wedding rings and use the relationship as a weapon, shoving Luther's face into the dirt and taunting Pawbert directly. Nick and Judy are handled with equal contempt. A resistance rescue — a cargo truck and a clouded leopard emerging from the trees — pulls the pack free. The clouded leopard delivers the episode's defining words: she stayed because three weeks ago she bought mangoes from a cart on Thiri Street, and no one stopped her, and that morning is what the military took.

At a port town, Nick finds a fishing cat captain whose boat, the Serenity, makes the crossing to Madripaw. The crossing is quiet until a fast craft pursues them under fire. Three shots from an elevated position on Madripaw's ridgeline neutralize the pursuers. Reacher's team is waiting at the dock. Luther quietly asks Neagley about the shots; she confirms they were not ZSI. Luther files the question in the part of his head reserved for answers that never come.

After the pack departs, the audience sees what the pack does not: a red fox in a charcoal three-piece suit breaking down a rifle on the ridgeline, each component nesting into a bespoke garment bag. He straightens his cuffs and walks away.

The episode closes in the mansion kitchen. Four green mugs on the counter. The green sweater on its hook upstairs, undisturbed. Pawbert watches the news from Naypyipaw and thinks of the mammals who stayed. Luther appears beside him. Their rings touch.

A Burmese protest song that carries the weight of a country's defiance. The episode ends with the pack home and the news still running — the mammals they met are still in the same country the pack left. The song belongs to those mammals: the innkeeper, the civet, the buffalo mother, the clouded leopard, the vendor on Thiri Street whose mango cart is still empty. The pack can watch. The country keeps fighting.

Notes

• The sun bear fitness instructor filming her routine as military vehicles roll past behind her is a direct reference to the viral video from the February 1, 2021 Myanmar coup, in which aerobics instructor Khing Hnin Wai filmed her morning exercise outside parliament in Naypyidaw as the military convoy passed. She continued her routine, apparently unaware. The video became the defining image of the coup worldwide.
• The pot-and-pan warning system references the real civilian resistance tactic during the Myanmar coup, where citizens banged pots, pans, and metal objects as a protest signal — a traditional practice believed to ward off evil spirits, repurposed as collective defiance and an early-warning network.
• The soldiers' discovery and weaponization of Luther and Pawbert's matching wedding rings references the criminalization of same-sex relationships in Myanmar under Section 377 of the colonial-era Penal Code and the documented escalation of anti-LGBTQ+ persecution following the 2021 coup, where pre-existing legal discrimination made LGBTQ+ individuals disproportionately vulnerable to military violence.
