The Chart

The Chart is a laminated document created by Nick Wilde to track Luther Pawthorne's behavior during recovery from injuries sustained in a ZSI raid. Originally a joke, it becomes the defining comedic artifact of Season 4 and is framed in mahogany as Luther's birthday gift — described as "evidence of love."

History

Origin (S04E16)

Luther is pulled out of a collapsed building during a ZSI operation alongside Reacher's team and comes home with three broken ribs, a concussion and two weeks of ordered bed rest. That first evening, with Luther installed on the living room couch at Pawthorne Mansion, Nick announces the idea: a chart, with categories, one of which he claims is already at one. He draws nothing that night. Luther promises to destroy it anyway, and Nick tells him it will be laminated.

Full Creation (S04E17)

Luther proves to be a terrible patient, and Nick makes good on it with poster board, markers and a ruler, laying them out on the coffee table like blueprints. The categories go up in surprisingly neat penmanship, and Nick hangs the finished board on the living room wall where it is visible from the couch. It is laminated the following morning.

The categories Nick invents are specific to the offense, and he adds more as Luther supplies them:

Later additions include TIMES PAWBERT DEFENDED THE CHART and SEDATION THREATS. One category is proposed and refused: Nick declines to document the bathroom assistance Pawbert had to provide, on the grounds that The Chart has limits.

Birthday Gift (S04E19)

The framing is Pawbert's idea — give it to Luther as a joke gift that is also a real one, because he has spent his life gathering intelligence and looking for proof. Nick supplies the phrase for it, "evidence of love," and takes the board to a frame shop run by a stoat, who fits it in a mahogany frame with cream matting and museum-quality glass. At the party the pack presents it as a gift from the household, and by then the tallies have grown:

Luther calls it terrible and documentation of his worst qualities, then says he will hang it in his ZPD office precisely because no one there will understand it. For the rest of the evening it stays propped against the wall beside the mantel, its edges adjusted level.

The Chart 2.0 (S05E22)

After the injuries Luther sustains at the end of the Icener crisis — a gunshot wound to the thigh, four broken ribs, internal bleeding, and coding twice on the operating table — Nick arrives at the hospital with a fresh roll of poster board. He started it in the ambulance. The header reads THE CHART 2.0 - BECAUSE SOME WOLVES NEVER LEARN, and the categories are updated for the current crisis: escape attempts on the current recovery, gunshot wounds sustained, times Bailey threatened sedation, buildings collapsed on Luther counted lifetime, and times Pawbert had to physically restrain him. Pawbert admits he helped update it. Nick has the sequel framed to match the original, which by then hangs in Luther's office.

The Last Entry (S05E24)

Back at the mansion after the wedding, Nick props The Chart 2.0 against the living room wall with a final round of updates: escape attempts closed out at 12, one of them starred, times Luther said he hates all of you at 14, and refused bed rest logged as "Uncountable." At the bottom, in fresh ink, is a new line recording the consummation of the apron incident, starred three times.

Significance

The Chart represents the lighter side of pack life — the humor that sustains relationships through difficulty. Nick's impulse to document, categorize, and joke about Luther's behavior is itself an expression of love. The fact that Luther keeps it framed proves he understands this.
