The Chart
The Chart is a laminated document created by Nick Wilde to track Luther Pawthorne's behavior during recovery from injuries sustained in a ZSI raid. Originally a joke, it becomes the defining comedic artifact of Season 4 and is framed in mahogany as Luther's birthday gift—described as "evidence of love."
History
Origin (S04E16)
When Luther is injured during a ZSI raid alongside Reacher's team (three broken ribs, building collapse), Nick first declares his intent: "I'm making a chart." The concept is born at the hospital as Nick begins cataloguing Luther's recovery infractions.
Full Creation (S04E17)
Luther proves to be a terrible patient—attempting to work from the couch, arguing with the pack about readiness, and making multiple escape attempts from rest. Nick creates, laminates, and displays The Chart to document every infraction.
Categories Tracked
The Chart documents:
- Escape attempts from bed rest
- Complaints about inactivity
- Recovery mishaps (injuries from trying to do too much)
- Arguments with medical staff or pack members about readiness
- General observations on Luther's inability to be idle
Birthday Gift (S04E19)
The pack frames The Chart in mahogany and presents it to Luther as his birthday gift. Luther pretends to be annoyed but keeps it prominently displayed. The gift represents the pack's humor and love—they track his worst moments not to embarrass him but because they care enough to notice.
The Chart 2.0 (S05E22)
After Luther's far more severe injuries in Season 5 (coded four times), Nick creates an updated version. The Chart 2.0 includes the infamous entry: "APRON INCIDENT CONSUMMATION: 1 glorious instance."
Significance
The Chart represents the lighter side of pack life—the humor that sustains relationships through difficulty. Nick's impulse to document, categorize, and joke about Luther's behavior is itself an expression of love. The fact that Luther keeps it framed proves he understands this.
