The Rookie is the police procedural behind the Precinct 7 crossover characters in We Can Fix Pawbert. Created by Alexi Hawley and premiering on ABC in 2018, it follows John Nolan, who joins the LAPD in his forties and becomes its oldest rookie.

Overview

In We Can Fix Pawbert, The Rookie characters are reimagined as officers of Precinct 7, a ZPD precinct that runs cleaner and more structured than Precinct 99 — the difference between discipline and devotion. The crossover keeps the training officer/rookie pairing intact, and Precinct 7 recurs as the pack's partner house on joint operations from the first season through the Icener crisis.

  • "Waiting Game" — A joint operation traces Tempest Holdings to a harbor-district site. Luther works Harper's tactical unit on the north exit, and the seizure confirms stolen weather wall components

Season 3: Fur Your Eyes Only (S03E02)

  • "Fur Your Eyes Only" — An exchange day pairs Nick with Chen and Judy with Nolan and his rookie Juarez, while Bradford coordinates. Smitty recognizes a prison break room in a frightened porcupine's photographs, and the witness is dead before the day ends

Season 5: Strike (S05E13)

  • "Strike" — After the Precinct 1 bombing, Grey puts Precinct 7 on high alert, orders the roster double-checked and the morning's arrivals verified by paw, and Smitty pulls the log. He knows the only reason his house is still standing may be that it was never the target

Season 5: Cost of Entry (S05E15)

  • "Cost of Entry" — Precinct 7 deploys to ZSI headquarters for three simultaneous raids on candidate sites for The Root. Nolan and Pawbert meet again years on, and Grey's team is the one that runs into entrenched hostiles

Season 5: Final Position (S05E21)

  • "Final Position" — The whole house turns out for the assault on Reptile Ravine. Grey commands the western element — the BAU in the field, Precincts 1 and 7, and supporting units from Precincts 4 and 8 — with Lopez running her tactical team by radio and Harper waiting at the vehicles. Bradford blows the fence, Chen goes through first, and Nolan and Juarez work as a pair; the objective is to open a lane for Main Entry. Nolan takes shrapnel from a grenade and refuses to fall back

W-Series

  • "Recruit Grumpiski" — Nolan, Bradford and Chen come to the ZPD Academy as guest instructors, and Nolan opens with the story of being called the graymuzzle in his own cadet class

Notes

  • John Nolan is played in The Rookie by Nathan Fillion, who also starred as Captain Mal Reynolds on Firefly (2002). The W-Series pays that off with a fishing vessel named Serenity
