Agnes De'Snake
Agnes De'Snake is a pit viper and the true inventor of Zootopia's Weather Walls — the climate-control systems that made the city's multi-district cohabitation possible. A historical figure who died before the events of Zootopia 2, Agnes's stolen legacy is the inciting injustice behind the entire Zootopia 2 and We Can Fix Pawbert narrative. Her great-grandson Gary De'Snake dedicated his life to clearing her name, and her failsafe code — FOR_ALL — shut the weather wall systems down and permanently revoked root access to them during the Icener crisis, over a century after her death, removing Icener's leverage and buying time for rescue forces to arrive.

Background
The True Founding of Zootopia
Agnes De'Snake dreamed of creating a place where all animals — including reptiles — could live side by side. She designed the Weather Wall system, the massive climate-control infrastructure that maintains district-specific environments across Zootopia. The most iconic segment, the Tundratown-Sahara Square wall, was her creation.
Agnes sketched her plans in what would later be known as the "Lynxley Journal" (which actually belonged to her) and received a patent proving the Weather Walls were her invention. Needing capital to fund construction, she asked Ebenezer Lynxley to serve as her business partner and investor.
The Betrayal
Ebenezer Lynxley coveted Agnes's invention. After accepting her journal containing the designs, he:
- Stole credit for her invention, claiming the Weather Walls as his own work
- Disposed of her journal to eliminate evidence of her authorship
- Murdered his own tortoise maid, who had witnessed the crime and recovered the patent from the fireplace before it could be destroyed
- Framed Agnes for the murder, using snake venom to make the killing appear to be Agnes's doing
- Activated the Tundratown weather walls to bury Reptile Ravine in snow, forcing all reptiles to flee Zootopia
- Personally shut off all power to the Reptile Ravine lighthouse
Because Agnes was a snake, everyone believed Ebenezer's lie. The scandal resulted in the mass displacement of reptiles from Zootopia. Reptile history was erased as if they had never existed.
The Preserved Patent
Before her arrest, Agnes managed one final act of defiance. The tortoise maid had given Agnes the rescued patent before dying. Agnes hid it in her home in Reptile Ravine — inside a music box in the De'Snake family house. Ebenezer died believing he had committed the perfect crime. He was wrong.
A century later, Gary De'Snake recovered the patent with the help of Judy Hopps, Nick Wilde, and Nibbles Maplestick, exposing the Lynxley family as frauds and vindicating Agnes's name.
The Failsafe
Agnes built a failsafe into the Weather Wall system — a shutdown code that could disable the technology in an emergency. The clue to this code was hidden in her journals and personal writings, preserved in Reptile Ravine.
Season 5
In "The Godfather", Pawbert and Gary search Agnes's documents and find the two halves of a puzzle: journal entries recording that she and Ebenezer inscribed five founding words on the interface itself, and a note reading "The failsafe lives within our mission." She never writes those five words down anywhere in the journals, and Gary has never worked out what they are.
In "Final Position", during the climax of the Icener crisis, Pawbert finds the inscription worn into the console frame — most of it faded past reading — and works out the two words that complete it. The failsafe code is FOR_ALL. He triggers a temporary shutdown of the city's weather wall systems, requiring a manual reset, and with it a permanent revocation of root access so that no code would ever work again — not Icener's, not Pawbert's, not anyone's. The failsafe removed Icener's leverage and bought time for the rescue teams to reach them. Agnes's vision — a city built for all — became the final play that ensured Icener could never win, a century after her death.
Legacy
Agnes De'Snake's influence extends far beyond her lifetime:
- Reptile Ravine: Reopened after the events of Zootopia 2; reptiles reintegrated into Zootopia
- The Weather Walls: Her invention remains Zootopia's defining infrastructure and its single largest terrorism vulnerability
- Gary De'Snake: Her great-grandson carries her legacy forward, his optimism and determination inherited from the grandmother who dreamed of a city for all
Season 5
- The Failsafe Code: FOR_ALL shuts the weather wall systems down and permanently revokes root access to them in "Final Position", removing Icener's leverage and proving Agnes anticipated the possibility that her technology could be misused
- The Lynxley Family: The dynasty built on her stolen work ultimately collapses — Milton imprisoned for life, then killed; Cattrick and Kitty escaped; Pawbert redeemed and freed from the Lynxley name entirely
W-Series
"The Call" enlarges what her machine under the lighthouse is. It is the power source behind every weather wall on the grid as well as their control interface, still running under the concrete the city poured over her console after the Icener crisis, wired into the modern grid through a translator that converts her units into its own. Her instruments read her plant honestly the whole night; it is the translator, unable to represent a value that low, that wraps the reading to the top of its scale and sets the city's emergency machinery running against a catastrophe that is not there. The Reptile Ravine chief engineer, dining with Gary, reads the plant off her original instruments and reports it at rest, and that reading is what stops the Crisis Coordination Center from firing charges under Tundratown.
What If
The What-If episodes are alternate timelines and do not affect the main continuity.
In "What If... the Weakest Lynx Chose Differently?", the episode ends in Agnes's house. Pawbert stops before he can walk out of the weather wall control room, and by that evening he is descending into Reptile Ravine alongside Gary, Judy, Nick and Nibbles — Ebenezer's great-grandson walking the street his family buried. Judy gets a streetlamp working at the foot of the stairs and the light spreads from lamp to lamp until the frozen town is lit again after a hundred years. They find the De'Snake residence intact: the family tree on the nursery wall, a height chart shaped like a snake, and on Agnes's desk the wooden music box with its carved snake and rabbit still mid-greeting. The mechanism plays, the bottom panel swings open, and the original patent is inside. Pawbert picks the box up, looks at the two figures saying hello to each other, and apologizes. In this reality nobody sets a lamp to any of it.
Key Relationships
Ebenezer Lynxley
Agnes's business partner and betrayer. She trusted him as an investor; he repaid that trust with theft, murder, and the destruction of her community. Their partnership — and its corruption — is summarized in the founding phrase that became the failsafe: "Built by two, for all." Agnes meant it. Ebenezer did not.
Gary De'Snake
Agnes's great-grandson, who dedicated his life to clearing her name and bringing his family home to Zootopia. Gary's quest in Zootopia 2 is a direct continuation of Agnes's unfinished fight for justice.
Pawbert Pawthorne
Agnes's legacy intersects with Pawbert in complex ways. Pawbert is the great-grandson of the mammal who destroyed Agnes's life. During Zootopia 2, he tried to burn Agnes's patent to protect the Lynxley name. But in "Final Position", it is Pawbert who discovers Agnes's failsafe code and uses it to shut the weather walls down and permanently revoke root access to them, removing Icener's leverage and buying time for rescue — completing a redemption arc that spans both families.
