Nibbles Maplestick
Nibbles Maplestick is a beaver and a major character in Zootopia 2. She is a podcaster and conspiracy theorist who runs the show "Scales and Tales," which covers topics most Zootopians consider fringe β including the existence of reptiles. Her knowledge of Zootopia's hidden reptile population and the underground community at Marsh Market makes her an invaluable ally to Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde during the Lynxley conspiracy.
"Stand-offish around landies." β Nibbles, warning Judy and Nick about Marsh Market etiquette
Background
Zootopia 2
Nibbles first appears reporting on a snake sighting in Zootopia β the first in a century. When Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde become fugitives after being framed by the Lynxley family, Fru Fru suggests they consult Nibbles as a reptile expert.
Nibbles eagerly drives them to Marsh Market, a neighborhood for aquatic animals that houses a secret reptile population. She guides them through the community's customs, warning them that the locals are "stand-offish around landies" and that they need to show respect. She introduces them to Russ the plumber walrus and leads them to the Reptile Hangout, where they meet JesΓΊs, a plumed basilisk who provides crucial information about the Lynxley Journal.
When the ZPD raids the hangout, Nibbles is arrested. Later, when Nick is placed in a nearby cell, she gnaws a mop handle into a key to help them escape β accidentally releasing all prisoners in the process, including Dawn Bellwether.
Nibbles rides with Nick in Flash's car to reach Judy at the weather wall. She saves Nick from being trapped outside the control room. She is then stabbed with snake venom by Pawbert during his betrayal, but survives thanks to Gary's antivenom.
At the climax, Nibbles plays a pivotal role in convincing Mayor Winddancer to stand up to the Lynxleys and be a real hero instead of just playing one on screen. She also whittles a log into a baseball bat to help subdue Pawbert during the final chase.
Personality
Nibbles is friendly, helpful, and enthusiastic β she immediately declares that she, Nick, and Judy will be best friends. She has a practical knowledge of Zootopia's underbelly that proves essential to the heroes' investigation.
Key personality traits:
- Eccentric β Her conspiracy theorist background gives her an unfiltered, slightly unhinged energy
- Resourceful β Can gnaw through nearly anything; fashions tools from wood instinctively
- Loyal β Sticks with the heroes through danger despite having no obligation to do so
- Culturally aware β Understands the customs and sensitivities of Marsh Market's diverse population
- Sensitive about species β Dislikes being called a "woodchuck"
Series Appearances
Season 1
S01E16 "The Words"
Nibbles joins a structured apology session by video link, facilitated by Dr. Fuzzby, arriving mid-errand with her camera far too close to her face and taking a moment to work out which incident is being discussed. Her response runs on its own frequency. She declares herself fine, treats the stabbing as material for her show, and trades lines with Nick, who accuses her of using trauma for engagement and is told she is processing through productivity. The sincerity underneath surfaces late: she tells Pawbert she is not going to hold onto it, because he is obviously going through something. She signs off by inviting him onto her podcast once the legal process allows, a pitch Fuzzby heads off.
S01E19 "Green Candle"
Nibbles turns up in the background of Gary's call to Site Two on Pawbert's twenty-fifth birthday and takes over most of it, having brought a broadcast microphone and headphones to a video call on the principle that audio quality is respect. She renews the podcast pitch, citing a grown show and a new jingle, and in the middle of it becomes the one who gets a real laugh out of Pawbert, involuntary enough to startle him. Her sign-off includes a hurried "love you," aimed at the mammal who stabbed her, which leaves Nick staring at the blank screen afterward.
S01E23 "The Trial"
Nibbles gives the last of the victim impact statements at Pawbert's sentencing hearing. She appears remotely, on a tablet propped on the witness stand, because she does not do courtrooms. She recounts the week in the hospital, lifts her shirt to show the scar, and admits to a long stretch of rage before she started following the case and decided he was genuinely trying to fix the larger thing, even though what he did to her cannot be undone. Her closing advice to Pawbert is to get therapy in prison.
Season 5
S05E24 "Always"
Nibbles attends the double wedding as a guest, her presence a reminder of the full circle Pawbert's journey has made β from the mammal who stabbed her with venom to the mammal whose wedding she celebrates.
W-Series
In "Touch Grass", Nibbles turns up at the campsite next to the pack's, at a Marshlands glamping ground she visits every other weekend. She hugs Nick and Judy at full compression, pauses a beat before hugging Pawbert, reads Luther correctly on sight and offers him a paw instead. Then she runs the weekend: mosquito warnings issued in advance, the dock bell rung for Russ the walrus ferry operator and the one-syllable greeting the two of them have made a ritual, a narrated tour of Marsh Market, and a briefing on Reptile Hangout etiquette that doubles as setup for JesΓΊs the basilisk's grub prank. At the fire on Saturday night she renews the podcast offer she has been making Pawbert for years, observes that he gave the same answer last time, and lets an unguarded line about nearly losing the neighborhood escape before pivoting back to a conspiracy about marshmallow supply. Pawbert squeezes her paw without saying anything and she squeezes back.
What If
The What-If episodes are alternate timelines and do not affect the main continuity.
In "What If... the Weakest Lynx Chose Differently?", Nibbles arrives at the weather wall control room unhurt, alongside Nick, and watches the reunion from the doorway, visibly sorry she has nothing to record it on. She breaks the standoff over Pawbert by asking whether they are arresting him or the mammals who buried a civilization under Tundratown. She walks the frozen streets of Reptile Ravine with the others and tears up at a long sock left on a clothesline, and in Agnes's living room afterward she is negotiating exclusives and appraising Pawbert's green sweater as good television.
Key Relationships
Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde
Nibbles serves as an essential guide during their fugitive period, providing access to Marsh Market and the reptile community. Her eagerness and enthusiasm contrast with the gravity of the situation, providing moments of levity.
Gary De'Snake
Fellow ally in the fight to prove the existence and rights of reptiles. Gary's antivenom saves Nibbles's life after Pawbert's betrayal.
Mayor Winddancer
Nibbles is the one who convinces Winddancer to stop being Milton's puppet and become a genuine hero, leading to the climactic moment where Winddancer takes down the Lynxley family.
Pawbert Pawthorne
Nibbles is one of Pawbert's four victims. He assured her he was on her side before stabbing her with venom β a premeditated betrayal. Her survival and Pawbert's subsequent remorse are part of the series' broader examination of accountability and redemption.
Trivia
- Nibbles's name is a reference to how real-life beavers feed on wood bark.
- Her wooden car features stickers including "Reptiles Exist," a UFO sticker reading "Going Home," and the title of her podcast: "Scales and Tales."
- She was chosen to be a beaver because beavers have scales on their tails like reptiles do, blending mammal familiarity with reptile connection.
