"The Godfather" is the eighteenth episode of Season 5 of We Can Fix Pawbert. It features the return of Reacher's team from Vladifrostok.

Synopsis

With ZSI headquarters destroyed, Mr. Big's Tundratown mansion becomes the temporary command center—an unprecedented alliance of law enforcement and organized crime. Pawbert travels to Reptile Ravine to search Agnes De'Snake's journals for a failsafe code, while Mr. Big breaks a captured wolverine to confirm that Icener's attack is imminent. Reacher's team returns from Vladifrostok with intelligence, and Mr. Big gives succession instructions to Fru Fru.

Plot

Mr. Big's mansion has been transformed into ZSI's temporary headquarters. Crystal chandeliers illuminate tactical maps spread across antique tables, combat boots leave marks on marble floors, and weapons racks sit beside porcelain vases. Costa, his arm in a sling from the collapse, commands from the formal dining table while Shaw reviews positions with a bandage above her eye, Bauer coordinates CTU via tablet, and O'Brian works from a hastily assembled signals station with her salvaged data drive. Mr. Big surveys the scene with characteristic authority, observing that a crime boss and city law enforcement working from the same building would have been unthinkable six years ago. Costa responds that six years ago, they were not fighting the same enemy. Fru Fru manages the household logistics, moving Judith's things to secure rooms while trying to hide her fear.

Costa briefs the team: the wolverine captured during a harbor reconnaissance sweep confirms an attack is imminent, and Pawbert proposes traveling to Reptile Ravine to search Agnes De'Snake's documents for information about The Root. Luther wants to accompany him, but Pawbert refuses—Luther is needed for the Tundratown defense. Their parting exchange—"Be careful" / "Always"—is their anchor phrase. Meanwhile, Acting Chief Hoggbottom delivers the captured wolverine with detailed reconnaissance maps of the district. Shaw's professional interrogation produces nothing; the wolverine is trained and holds out. Mr. Big offers an alternative. Costa turns away with the words "This conversation never happened," tacitly authorizing the crime boss's methods. In the wine cellar, flanked by Raymond and Koslov, Mr. Big breaks the prisoner through nothing more than presence and reputation—soft-spoken words, the weight of decades of whispered stories, and Raymond cracking his knuckles against stone walls. The wolverine reveals the attack is final reconnaissance, hours away, targeting Tundratown. He knows nothing about The Root's location.

In Reptile Ravine, Gary greets Pawbert with characteristic exuberance, asking permission to hug and narrating the community's transformation over the past six years. The tour reveals a thriving community: climate-controlled barriers, terraced levels for different species, a market square with Rainforest District traders, Agnes's bronze statue at the west entrance, and new construction woven between century-old architecture. At the De'Snake residence, Gary shows Pawbert Agnes's leather-bound journals. They read Agnes's early entries about her partnership with Ebenezer Lynxley, her optimism about building a city for everyone, and her later growing suspicion. Agnes mentions founding words—five simple words inscribed on the interface itself—but never writes them out, assuming they would always be there. She also describes building an emergency failsafe: a shutdown code that could temporarily lock the system during a catastrophe. The only clue to the code is a cryptic note: "The failsafe lives within our mission." Gary cannot decipher it despite reading the journals many times. When Pawbert expresses doubt about figuring it out, Gary reminds him of something he said years ago: "The world was never meant to be on one animal's shoulders." He affirms their shared phrase with sudden conviction: "We shall succeed, Pawbert Lynxley."

Reacher's team arrives at the mansion—exhausted and road-worn from weeks in hostile territory. Reacher fills the doorway and delivers his greeting: "Heard you started a war without us." Neagley reports that Icener has been planning this for six years; O'Donnell has names, supply chains, and everything Icener brought with him. Luther needs shooters, not briefings, and assigns Reacher's team to the north sector main approach. Costa orders final positions in thirty minutes. Defensive lines are established in a three-quadrant split screen: Reacher's team on the north sector with ZPD backup, Luther and Bauer with CTU teams on the east sector alongside Mr. Big's polar bears, and Shaw with Nick and Judy covering the thinner south sector as the warning system.

In the mansion's upper floor, Mr. Big sits with Fru Fru and Koslov for a private moment. He gives his succession instructions: if he falls, Koslov will protect the family, and Fru Fru takes over. She recites the promise through tears: she will take over, protect the family, and lead. Mr. Big tells her she is stronger than she knows and asks Koslov to protect his daughter, his grandchild, and the family. Koslov pledges his life. In the tag, Mr. Big sits alone at the study window, looking out at his city, his territory, the empire he built. Pawbert studies Agnes's cryptic words in Reptile Ravine. Icener's forces move through the darkness. An arctic shrew watches the night and waits for war.

Notes

  • The title references Mr. Big's role as a crime patriarch and his willingness to sacrifice everything for his people and city.
  • Agnes's cryptic failsafe note becomes critical when Pawbert stands at The Root's console and deciphers the founding words inscribed there.
  • Gary's "Permission to hug?" callback is one of his signature moments across the series.
  • Costa's arm, broken under a fallen console in the ZSI HQ collapse, remains in a sling throughout the Tundratown operation and persists through Shaw's funeral.
  • The wine cellar interrogation scene is played entirely through implication: Mr. Big uses no violence, only the weight of his reputation and the presence of his polar bears.
  • Reptile Ravine's expansion since its restoration is described in detail for the first time, showing the community Gary's family built.
