"The Godfather" is the eighteenth episode of Season 5 of We Can Fix Pawbert and a Reacher crossover. It opens two days after the assault that gutted ZSI's headquarters, with the agency running its operation out of Mr. Big's Tundratown mansion. Pawbert leaves the defense to search Agnes De'Snake's papers in Reptile Ravine for anything that names the location of The Root.

Synopsis

Two days after the assault on ZSI headquarters, Mr. Big offers his Tundratown mansion as a temporary command center, and Director Costa moves the operation in. Costa asks for district intelligence, the organization's knowledge of Tundratown, and Mr. Big's polar bears integrated with the tactical teams, and Mr. Big grants all of it. Pawbert leaves for Reptile Ravine over Luther's objection, hoping Agnes De'Snake's papers name the location of The Root. Acting Chief Hoggbottom delivers a captured wolverine scout; Shaw's interrogation gets nothing, so Costa authorizes Mr. Big to try and walks away. Flanked by his bodyguards, Mr. Big breaks the prisoner on presence and reputation alone, and the wolverine admits the assault on Tundratown is hours away. In the Ravine, Gary De'Snake shows Pawbert the rebuilt reptile community, then Agnes's journals, which reveal that she designed an emergency shutdown code and left one cryptic clue to it, and that she and Ebenezer Lynxley inscribed five founding words on the interface that she never wrote down. Gary repeats what he told Pawbert years ago, that no single animal was ever meant to carry the world. Reacher's team returns from Vladifrostok reporting that Icener has been preparing for six years, and Luther posts them on the north approach. With defensive positions set across the district, Mr. Big tells Koslov to protect the family if he falls and has Fru Fru repeat her promise to lead, then sits alone at his window while Icener's forces move through the dark.

Plot

Two days after the assault that gutted ZSI's headquarters, the agency is running its war out of Mr. Big's Tundratown mansion. Tactical maps cover the antique tables, communications gear is bracketed to walls hung with oil paintings, and ZSI personnel in combat boots cross marble floors under the crystal chandeliers Mr. Big refused to have taken down. Costa commands from the head of the formal dining table with his arm in a sling, moving stiffly from injuries taken in the collapse. Shaw works the defensive positions with a fresh bandage over her left eye, Bauer runs CTU coordination from a tablet, and O'Brian has built a signals station along the far wall around the data drive she salvaged. Carried in on his chair by his bodyguard Raymond, Mr. Big observes that a crime boss and city law enforcement sharing a building would have been unthinkable six years ago, and Costa answers that six years ago they were not fighting the same enemy. Costa asks for Tundratown intelligence, the organization's knowledge of the district, and Mr. Big's polar bears integrated with the tactical teams; Mr. Big grants all three and says he will not see his city fall. Fru Fru readies a wing for the tactical teams and moves her daughter Judith into the secure rooms, keeping her fear off her face for the child's sake. Her father sees through it.

At the briefing, Costa tells the pack that Icener lost thirty operatives in the headquarters assault and that a Tundratown attack is confirmed but undated. The Root's location is still unknown to everyone but Icener, who learned it from Milton. Pawbert proposes searching Agnes De'Snake's papers — the journals and engineering notes Gary inherited — for the location or the access codes, and Costa sends him with orders to copy anything relevant. Luther offers to come along and Pawbert refuses, arguing that Luther is needed on the line and that Reptile Ravine is a community rather than a combat zone. Nick deflates the moment with a bid for a share of any ancient snake treasure. Luther walks Pawbert to the door alone and asks him to be careful, and Pawbert gives him the word that has carried them through every separation: "Always."

Acting Chief Hoggbottom, running the ZPD from Bogo's chair while he recovers, arrives with a wolverine taken on a reconnaissance sweep near the Harbor and hands over the detailed district maps found on him. Shaw works the prisoner in the converted wine cellar, pressing self-interest and the family waiting for him in Vladifrostok, and gets nothing past the name he gave at processing. Mr. Big offers to ask less politely, drawing a line between torture, which he says he does not do, and persuasion, which he does. Costa weighs the rules against the lives that may depend on the answer, tells the room the conversation never happened, and walks away.

Raymond and Koslov flank the cellar door while Kevin sets Mr. Big's chair down across from the prisoner. Mr. Big offers no threat beyond his own reputation. He tells the wolverine that his commander has already abandoned him, promises him a return to ZSI custody unharmed in exchange for one honest answer, and lets Raymond crack his knuckles against the stone. The wolverine breaks. He was running final reconnaissance ahead of an assault on Tundratown that is hours away at most, and field operatives are never told where The Root is. Mr. Big keeps his word and has him returned. Costa reads the report and commits to a district-wide defense.

Gary meets Pawbert at the Ravine's west entrance, asks permission to hug, and delivers one. Six years after the district was dug out, climate barriers hold warmth at the threshold, and the original scale-patterned roofs and paired doors stand alongside heat exchangers and solar collectors that would have read as science fiction in Agnes's day. Her bronze statue looks over the road down to the fountain. Gary tours Pawbert through terraces sorted by species and temperature, a market square where traders from the Rainforest District swap fruit for locally engineered heating crystals, and the Perón family's three generations of tegus. At the high point of the Ravine he points out Agnes's lighthouse, built to guide travelers before the walls were finished and the way Pawbert came in years ago, and the workshop beneath it that collapsed when Ebenezer buried the district.

Agnes's house survived and is Gary's now, and her cloth-bound journals run from the early partnership to the suspicion that came later. The first entries record her designs and Ebenezer's resources turned toward a city for everyone. Another records the day the two of them inscribed five founding words on the interface itself — words she refers back to throughout the journals and never once writes down, apparently assuming they would always be legible on the machine. A later passage describes an emergency shutdown code she built to lock the system temporarily while repairs were made, and the only clue she left to it is a single line in her engineering documentation: the failsafe lives within their mission. Gary has read everything she left, more than once, and has never worked out what it means. Pawbert reads it as a security measure, a clue phrased so that only Agnes could unlock it, and says he does not know whether he can solve a century-old puzzle in time. Gary repeats what he told him years ago, that the world was never meant to rest on one animal's shoulders, and closes with the phrase the two of them have shared since before everything fell apart. They spend the afternoon copying documents.

Reacher, Neagley, Dixon and O'Donnell arrive at the mansion dusty and bruised after weeks behind enemy lines. Icener gutted Vladifrostok's security services before leaving, and what survived of their intelligence files shows six years of preparation; O'Donnell has the names and the supply chains. Luther takes shooters over briefings and gives the team the north approach, and Costa calls final positions in thirty minutes. The ring closes across three sectors: Reacher's team north with ZPD backup, Luther and Bauer with CTU teams east alongside Mr. Big's polar bears, and Shaw with Nick and Judy holding a thin south line as the warning system. From a quiet corner of the mansion Luther raises Pawbert on the radio. Pawbert reports the failsafe clue and no location for The Root; Luther tells him the attack is imminent and to stay where he is and keep working. They trade the anchor exchange again, this time with Pawbert giving the caution and Luther answering it.

Upstairs in his private study, Mr. Big tells Fru Fru and Koslov what happens if he falls: Koslov knows what to do, he will protect the family, and Raymond and Kevin will follow him. He then asks his daughter whether she remembers her promise, and she recites it through tears — she takes over, she protects the family, she leads. He tells her she is stronger than she knows, asks Koslov to protect his daughter, his grandchild and his family, and takes the pledge in return before sending her to be with Judith. Mr. Big is left alone at the window over a compound where every position is manned, Pawbert still reading Agnes's clue in the Ravine, and Icener's forces moving through the dark toward Tundratown.
