S02E05 - The Vacuum
"The Vacuum" is the fifth episode of Season 2 of We Can Fix Pawbert. It is the first procedural episode following the extraction, shifting focus from recovery to the investigation of who is consolidating the Lynxley power vacuum.
Synopsis
At ZSI headquarters, Agent Corbin and Chief Bogo present the full scope of the threat: someone is consolidating the Lynxley power vacuum through shell companies, stolen weather wall credentials, and probed legacy systems. Pawbert challenges the official theory that the prison assault was a simple assassination attempt, recognizing his father's intelligence-gathering methodology in the breach pattern. He raises the possibility that Milton Lynxley's brother -- supposedly dead for thirty years -- may be alive. In the villain tag, an unknown figure discusses Pawbert as "the backup key."
Plot
The pack arrives at ZSI headquarters for Pawbert's first briefing as a consultant. Pawbert pauses at the entrance, wearing his mother's green sweater as armor, and admits to Luther that he is not ready. A year ago, mammals in this building were building a case against his family. Now he is walking in as a colleague. Agent Corbin meets them in the lobby and leads them to the fourth-floor briefing room, where Chief Bogo waits.
Corbin lays out the scope of the threat. In the year since the Lynxley convictions, someone has been consolidating the family's abandoned infrastructure. Shell companies have purchased military-grade explosives. Weather wall maintenance credentials have been stolen from three facilities in six weeks. Legacy Lynxley system access points have been surveyed by operatives on the ground—not through digital intrusion, but through physical reconnaissance. Eight former Lynxley employees who refused to cooperate have disappeared. Corbin's assessment is grim: whoever is behind this has resources and operational security rivaling state-level actors.
The briefing turns to the prison assault. Corbin presents three possible motives: eliminating a cooperative witness, sending a message to potential informants, or testing prison security for a future operation. He dismisses the third option as too costly in resources for a mere security audit. Bogo agrees, and the official theory remains assassination attempt. Pawbert is formally designated a ZSI consultant, with Luther reassigned to his protective detail while maintaining his ZPD cover.
During a break, Pawbert stands at the main display, studying the tactical diagram of the prison assault. Something nags at him. The breach points mapped every wing of the facility—not just his cell block. Administrative. Medical. Kitchen. Cell blocks A through D. He recalls Warden Hartwell's dying words and recognizes his father's intelligence-gathering methodology. He shares his analysis with Luther: the attack has all the signatures of reconnaissance before a major operation.
Pawbert and Luther bring the analysis to Corbin. Pawbert walks him through the evidence—the comprehensive mapping, the Lynxley training signatures, Hartwell's final observation. Corbin genuinely considers the theory, pulling up response time logs and guard movement records, but ultimately cannot identify a target or motive that makes sense. He flags the theory and keeps it open, but without more information, it remains a pattern that might not be a pattern.
The discussion turns to potential suspects. Pawbert reveals that his father has a brother—supposedly killed in a vehicle accident thirty years ago. He has never met this uncle and Milton never spoke about him. Given that Milton lied about everything else, Pawbert questions whether the death was real. Corbin notes they will investigate, though thirty years is a long time to stay hidden.
Outside ZSI headquarters at sunset, Nick vents his frustration at the scope of what they face. They have been chasing shadows for a year, and every answer leads to more questions. Pawbert steps forward and declares he is done waiting. He knows his family, knows how they operated, and intends to use that knowledge to find whoever is behind this—not because he owes anyone, but because it is right. Judy responds simply: together.
That evening at Site Two, Luther cooks a simple dinner—pasta and vegetables, efficient and practical. The pack discusses what they learned. Pawbert speculates about the uncle, noting that if Milton's brother survived and has been operating for thirty years, he would have the knowledge and connections to run an operation of this scale. In their bedroom later, Pawbert admits his instincts say the attackers were not there to kill him—but he cannot identify what they were after. Luther holds him close and promises they will stay ready together.
In an unknown location, a silver-furred paw sorts through prison blueprints and photographs marked with red X's. The Jaguar reports that the prison operation failed—security has tripled and the primary targets are inaccessible. The unknown voice disagrees. They learned exactly what they needed. With the nephew now cooperating with ZSI, they can reach him when he is brought out and used. The voice identifies Pawbert as the backup key, and backup keys have a way of becoming necessary.
