Season 4

Lane is introduced in "Tips", training Pawbert through his trial shift at the Grande Station and telling him at the end of it that everyone makes mistakes on day one and what matters is that he fixed them. He shows Pawbert how the communal tip jar works, and then, watching him hold his first earned money, offers the invitation the rest of the friendship grows out of: a few of them hang out after close at The Watering Hole, corner of Pack and Trip, and Pawbert should come sometime. No pressure. It is the first invitation anyone has extended him since before prison.

Pawbert takes it up in "Radio Silence", and Lane walks him over at cheetah speed with Brim riding his shoulder. He introduces Pawbert to the table, and when he spots the lynx talking to a red panda sketching alone nearby, he calls her over — "Mika! Come join us." On the way out he tells Pawbert the standing offer holds: same time next week if he wants, no pressure, always welcome.

Lane does not appear in "Incoming", but he is in the letters. Reading aloud to Luther after his return, Pawbert reaches the page about the night Lane basically dragged him out of the house.

He is the one who gets Pawbert out of the house again in "The Apron Incident", texting through Luther's convalescence that Selma says take all the time you need but they need his energy and Brim misses having someone to judge. When Pawbert walks in, Lane announces that he actually left the house and that Brim owes him five dollars. Later he catches Pawbert stuffing his own apron into a bag and spends the rest of the day trying to extract an explanation, delighted to be refused one. He paints a canvas of yellows and oranges at Mika's studio that afternoon, and takes Brim's "Lane, that's aggressive" as a compliment, because Lane takes everything as a compliment.

In "Routine", Lane texts Pawbert into his shift, reads the difference between his quiets — "You're quiet AND focused. Those are different quiets" — and slides a shot of espresso across the counter without waiting to be told what happened.

In "Full Circle", Lane works Pawbert's last shift beside him, mourning the loss of an audience for his foam art and complaining that his replacement will be mediocre where Pawbert was merely adequate. After Pawbert holds steady with a wildebeest who recognizes him, Lane tells him that was more than the job, that was handling it. At the hooks in the back, quieter than Pawbert has ever heard him, he says that Pawbert was good here — not just at the job, at being here — because some mammals show up to work and are only waiting for it to end, and Pawbert actually showed up. Then he names where to find them, the Watering Hole and Mika's studio, and sends him off with a theatrical wave from the threshold.

Lane arrives first at Pawbert's 28th birthday in "Loud and Determined", with a hug that is more enthusiasm than precision and the package the crew has brought: the green apron Pawbert hung up on his last day, saved so he could have it for his own kitchen. He cries during the speeches and blames allergies, and leaves having extracted a promise of coffee dates.

Brim often rides on Lane's shoulder.

Season 5

Lane appears briefly in "Golden Age" and "Pattern Recognition", demonstrating that Pawbert's friendships with the Snarlbucks crew have persisted well beyond his time at the coffee shop.

In "Departure", Lane organizes the turnout for a gathering at Pawthorne Mansion that Pawbert had forgotten he had planned. Lane arrives with a bottle of wine in each paw and a rosé still in the car, Brim on his shoulder, and an expanded guest list — having interpreted "casual gathering" as "bring everyone you know." He holds court in the kitchen with Snarlbucks stories and promises to plan a themed party next time.

Lane plays a critical community role during the weather wall attack in "Misdirection". When the coordinated strike overwhelms the city, Lane organizes a Meadowlands community center as an evacuation shelter. By the time Pawbert arrives, two hundred mammals, maybe more, are crammed into the space with no one who knows how to run a shelter operation. Lane is vibrating with anxiety but holding it together, with Brim clinging to his shoulder. When Pawbert takes charge and organizes the chaos with his ZRS training, Lane defers to his expertise and works through the night alongside him. By dawn, Lane's tally is two hundred and thirty-one mammals processed, and every one who walked through the doors walked out again. Lane sits beside Pawbert against the wall at sunrise, exhausted but able to recognize what Pawbert did: most mammals panic in a crisis, but Pawbert made things better.

In "Climate Control", Lane continues managing the shelter with the Snarlbucks crew — directing new arrivals, coordinating with Selma, Mika, and Brim — and physically forces Pawbert onto a cot after he has been going since before dawn. When Costa calls requesting "the Lynxley expert," Lane wakes Pawbert and tells him to go where he is needed more, gesturing at the functioning operation the team has built.

Lane serves as Pawbert's best mammal at the double wedding in "Always". His presence at the altar alongside Pawbert — a friend from the coffee shop, not from the battlefield — speaks to how far Pawbert's world has expanded.

W-Series

In "Nighthowler", Lane answers a text from Pawbert at half past midnight and is at Pawthorne Mansion twenty minutes later in a hooded sweatshirt with Brim on his shoulder. He reads the kitchen before he steps into it — the lynx at the table with his claws out, the kettle boiled and forgotten twice, a half-made risotto gone cold on the stove — asks only for as much as Pawbert can give him, and then works through the cupboards until he finds whole beans and a french press nobody has ever used, and makes the coffee by paw. What he offers is small and concrete: he is not going anywhere, he will be quiet if the phone rings, and he will lock the door behind Pawbert if Pawbert has to go.

It is in that kitchen, at around one in the morning, that Pawbert comes apart for the first time that night, and Lane is around the table in three strides with an arm across his shoulders. He refuses the apology that follows — Pawbert called because he needed someone, and that is what showing up is for. He gets bread into him when Maris phones with instructions, and when the call comes that sends Pawbert to the Meadowlands boundary, Lane has his keys before anyone asks him for them. He drives, brakes at the edge of a field with gunfire already in it, and waits out the rest of the night in the ICU corridor at Zootopia General.
