S04E13 - Tips
"Tips" is the thirteenth episode of Season 4 of We Can Fix Pawbert. Pawbert gets his first job since before prison and earns his first independent income.
Synopsis
Pawbert applies at the Snarlbucks near ZRS, disclosing his felony convictions. Manager Selma gives him a trial shift, where he learns the multi-station system and trains with barista Lane. Despite mistakes, he is hired. His first tips---approximately fourteen dollars---become his first earned income since before prison. He uses the money to buy dinner ingredients and four matching green mugs for the pack.
Plot
The episode opens with Pawbert finishing his day at ZRS, signing out in the lobby with his trainee badge around his neck. Walking his familiar route toward the ZTA station, he notices something he has passed dozens of times without really seeing: a hand-lettered hiring sign in the window of the Snarlbucks coffee shop on the corner of Acacia and Maple. The sign is nothing special, but something in Pawbert's chest tightens as he remembers standing at the ITREEA checkout while Luther paid for everything. He thinks about wanting something that is his, not given but earned.
That evening at the Pawthorne Mansion, Pawbert tells the pack about the hiring sign. He explains that he wants to have something of his own, money he puts in his own pocket through his own work. Luther responds with immediate understanding, recognizing Pawbert's need for agency and assuring him that this desire does not threaten their relationship. Nick teases him about making fancy espresso drinks, and Pawbert deflects with quiet confidence that he knows how to learn. The pack gives their support.
The next day, when Dr. Halestone's guest speaker finishes early and classes end ahead of schedule, Pawbert takes the ZTA downtown and walks into the Snarlbucks. The interior reveals a space designed for Zootopia's diverse mammal sizes: four separate counters arc around a central espresso station, each at different heights with appropriately scaled equipment. The Micro Station serves mice and shrews from a counter barely six inches off the ground; the Grande Station handles standard-sized mammals; the Venti Station looms with industrial-scale equipment for larger patrons.
In the back office, manager Selma conducts a straightforward interview. Pawbert discloses his full criminal record---conspiracy, assault, attempted murder, conviction three years ago, release four months ago, current Post-Release Supervision---without hedging or minimizing. Selma recognizes him from the news coverage of the Lynxley and Lionheart situations but does not let that derail the interview. She asks practical questions: can he show up on time, learn without breaking equipment, handle customers who might recognize him. Pawbert explains that he has been handling recognition for months. Selma offers him a trial shift the following day.
The trial shift introduces Pawbert to the world of commercial espresso. Lane, the cheetah working the Grande Station, trains him with infectious enthusiasm, explaining that espresso is both science and feeling. Pawbert's first attempts are failures---shots that sputter and spray, extractions too fast or too slow---but his third pull is acceptable. At the register, he fumbles with the screen and nearly charges a customer for three drinks instead of one. When a remake is requested, Pawbert glances at Selma, who has appeared near the back office. Her response encapsulates her management philosophy: learning is allowed here. Meanwhile, Brim, the mouse working the Micro Station with terrifying efficiency, offers dry commentary on how Grande mammals overcomplicate everything.
After the shift, the tips are divided. Pawbert's share is approximately fourteen dollars in bills and coins---nothing by most measures, but everything by one: the first money he has earned since before prison. He walks past the ZTA station to a Safewhey grocery store and spends his tips on vegetables, Nick's favorite cheese crackers, and four green ceramic mugs in the particular green of his sweater. A matched set for the pack.
At home, Pawbert presents the mugs to the pack. They are from his first tips, he explains, and Luther's response is simple acknowledgment of what Pawbert has accomplished on his own. The evening settles into hot chocolate in the new mugs, Nick declaring they have Pawbert energy, and the particular warmth of pack domesticity. Later that night, Luther and Pawbert share playful intimacy, with Luther committing fully to a series of increasingly terrible barista puns that leave Pawbert simultaneously exasperated and laughing. In the quiet aftermath, Luther tells Pawbert he is proud of him---the job, all of it---but Pawbert is already asleep, smile still on his face.
