"Radio Silence" is the fifteenth episode of Season 4 of We Can Fix Pawbert. Luther is summoned on a classified mission, and Pawbert endures four days of anxious waiting.

Synopsis

Luther is summoned on an urgent ZSI mission at 3 AM, leaving only "closed file" as explanation. Over four days, Pawbert struggles with anxiety, barely functioning at work and school. Lane convinces Pawbert to join the Snarlbucks crew at The Watering Hole, where he meets Mika, an artist who offers her studio as a judgment-free space. Pawbert begins writing in his STAY notebook again.

Plot

At 3:17 AM, Luther's phone vibrates with a distinctive pattern---three short, one long, three short---that Pawbert has never heard but somehow recognizes as urgent. Luther is awake before his eyes open, already moving toward the pre-packed duffel bag in the closet, his transition into operational mode instantaneous. When Pawbert asks what is happening, Luther offers only two words: closed file. The Pack Charter phrase, agreed upon just weeks earlier, is deployed for real for the first time. Luther kisses him goodbye and promises he will come back, that he always comes back. Then he is gone, and the house settles into silence.

Over four days, Pawbert spirals. He stops wearing the green sweater, switching to Luther's hoodie because it smells like him---until it does not anymore, until it just smells like Pawbert, like the places he has been without Luther. The fourth green mug sits unused on its hook. Nick and Judy bracket him at breakfast, at dinner, their presence steady but unable to fill the empty fourth chair. Pawbert checks his phone compulsively, counting: eleven times in one hour on Day Four.

On Day Three, Judy finds him on the couch late at night. She shares her own experience from when Nick was in the academy, how she used to imagine the worst, how she would play out the scenarios in her head. Her wisdom is not comforting, but it is honest: the worry does not go away, she tells him. You just make room for it. You let it sit there without letting it take over everything else.

At ZRS on Day Four, a coyote client arrives for intake with a story that mirrors Pawbert's precisely. Her partner had to leave for work, classified, security clearance; she cannot reach him, does not know when he is coming back. She describes loving someone who disappears. The words hit Pawbert like physical blows. He has to leave the room, retreating to the break room to breathe. Sorrel follows and offers quiet counsel: some days are harder, and that is allowed. The work does not care if we are at our best; it just asks us to show up.

After his Snarlbucks shift, Lane refuses to let Pawbert go home to stare at his phone. He insists on bringing Pawbert to The Watering Hole, the bar on Acacia and Third where the Snarlbucks crew gathers. Brim, perched on Lane's shoulder, offers blunt philosophy: waiting is the worst part; the thing either happens or it does not; the waiting does not change which. The words are not kind, but something about the bluntness cuts through in a way that kindness has not.

At the bar, Pawbert meets Mika, a red panda artist with a sketchbook and an uncanny ability to see what others miss. She observes immediately that his body is here but the rest of him is waiting somewhere else. She does not push him to explain, just acknowledges what she sees. She offers her studio in the Rainforest District above a noodle shop: a space where he can paint or not paint, talk or not talk, where there is tea and no judgment. When he notes that worrying does not help Luther wherever he is, she agrees---but worrying is still what we do, because caring is not something you can turn off.

That night, back at the mansion, Pawbert tells Nick and Judy about his evening. He realizes he did not check his phone for almost two hours---a small victory, but a real one. In bed, he reaches for the STAY notebook for the first time since Day 365, his final day in prison. He writes a letter to Luther: he has been wearing Luther's hoodie for four days; the fourth chair stays empty; he is learning to have a life even when Luther is not in it. The letter ends with a promise held against a promise: Luther said he would come back, said always, and Pawbert is holding him to that.
