"I choose to stay." โ Pawbert Lynxley, "I Choose to Stay"
Overview
Season 1 establishes the series' core premise: the redemption of a villain through genuine connection. Pawbert Lynxley, the youngest son of the Lynxley crime family, attempted to murder Judy Hopps and others during the events of Zootopia 2. Now imprisoned and targeted by his own father's kill order, he is assigned a mysterious protector named Luther โ a deep-cover ZSI agent โ along with liaisons Nick Wilde and Judy Hopps.
Over 24 episodes, these four form what will become "the pack," though that name is not coined until Season 2. The season tracks Pawbert's transformation from a suicidal, self-loathing prisoner to someone who โ for the first time โ chooses to stay rather than run.
Plot
The season begins immediately after Zootopia 2, with Pawbert Lynxley arrested, muzzled as a violent predator, and beaten in holding while his father Milton mouths a death threat from a passing transport. Abandoned by the Lynxley family's lawyers and assigned public defender Nikki Bramble, Pawbert accepts a cooperation agreement with the prosecution: full testimony against the Lynxley organization in exchange for protective custody and a determinate sentence. Under the protection of Luther, Nick, and Judy, he begins identifying and dismantling the network's enforcers, forgers, money launderers, and fixers across Zootopia.
In "Breach", a six-member hit squad assaults the safehouse. Luther orders the others to evacuate and stays behind alone, killing all six attackers before flatlining upon arrival at Site Two. His survival โ and the revelation that he is a deep-cover ZSI agent, not a ZPD officer โ transforms Pawbert's understanding of his own worth: someone chose to die for him, not for what he knew, but for who he was. The recovery episodes establish the emotional foundation of the series. Judy retrieves Pawbert's mother's green sweater from evidence in "Convalescence", and Nick organizes a shopping expedition to transform Site Two into an actual home in "Home". In "Clear Skies", the team dismantles MOSAIC โ a Lynxley blackmail archive โ and Pawbert comes out as gay, revealing that his first love Soren disappeared after Milton discovered the relationship.
Crossover episodes advance both the investigation and Pawbert's character growth. "Station 118" brings the 9-1-1 crew into a Lynxley money courier operation, during which Maddie gives Pawbert a handwritten card that becomes a treasured keepsake. The Brooklyn Nine-Nine crossover in "Precinct 99" and "The Heist" delivers the annual Halloween Heist, which Pawbert wins โ his first experience of belonging to something not built on cruelty. "Second Chances" pairs Pawbert with Nolan for a conversation about reinvention, while the Criminal Minds crossover in "Quietus" and "I Choose to Stay" pits the BAU against psychological assassin Dr. Silris Mawl. Pawbert defeats Mawl by confronting him directly, declaring the phrase that becomes the series thesis: "I choose to stay."
Between crossovers, personal milestones accumulate. Luther and Pawbert's first kiss occurs in "Soft Launch". Pawbert formally apologizes to each of his victims in "The Words". His twenty-fifth birthday in "Green Candle" introduces flashbacks to his mother Lillian calling him "loud and determined." Luther and Pawbert exchange their first declarations of love in "Mandated Joy".
The season's final act covers trial preparation with the Suits legal team Pearson Specter Litt in "Counsel" and "Moot", followed by the RICO trial itself in "The Trial". Prosecutorial corruption is exposed, and the Lynxley family is convicted: Milton, Cattrick, and Kitty each receive life without parole. Pawbert is sentenced to twelve years determinate with conditional release eligibility at approximately ten years three months, plus five years post-release supervision. The violent predator designation is struck, meaning he will no longer be muzzled. The finale, "Last Morning", follows Pawbert through prison intake at Zootopia Correctional Facility, where he surrenders his keepsakes except a laminated photograph of his mother and begins his sentence reading letters from his pack.
