Benjamin Clawhauser

Season 2

During the Clawrence siege arc, Clawhauser is present at Precinct 1 when it comes under direct assault. In "Foxhole", he is behind the front desk when twelve attackers breach the precinct doors. In "Tempest", Judy protects Clawhauser behind the duty desk during the continued assault, shielding him while the pack fights to defend the precinct.

Season 3

Clawhauser works the Precinct 1 front desk during the cross-training exchange with Precinct 7 officers ("Fur Your Eyes Only"), where his chief complaint about the visiting shift is that he offered Bradford a donut and got nothing back but a stare.

On the night of the prison breach ("Dead or Alive") he is the voice on the other end of the radio, patching Nick through to Chief Bogo and feeding Judy what fragments he can pull about the Sahara Square tunnel access while the entire department is looking at the prison and nobody is looking at the transit system. When Lionheart's broadcast takes over every monitor in the bullpen, Clawhauser is the one who works out how it was done. The department cannot cut the feed because the feed is not theirs to cut: Paddock came over from municipal maintenance six years earlier with keys to the city's infrastructure, and a service credential of his is still live inside the emergency alert backbone, renewed every cycle under a technician who retired years ago. The access had not been left behind by accident; somebody had been keeping it alive.

Following the crisis, Clawhauser brings a stack of complaints filed against Nick and Judy to Bogo's office ("A Wanted Mammal"). Bogo shreds them without reading.

Season 4

In "Release", Clawhauser notices Nick and Judy's nervous energy on the morning of Pawbert's release — he has bought cookies for Pawbert's return. When Pawbert visits ZPD Precinct 1 in "Open Enrollment", Clawhauser envelops him in an exuberant hug, overwhelmed with excitement at seeing Pawbert in the building as a free mammal rather than through the visitor window.

When Luther arrives for his first day as ZSI-ZPD Liaison ("Liaison"), Clawhauser announces him to the whole lobby at full volume — "WELCOME TO ZPD, AGENT PAWTHORNE!" — then produces the paw-lettered banner he made for the occasion, glitter letters reading WELCOME AGENT PAWTHORNE, ringed with paw prints and tiny handcuffs drawn in marker. He has also furnished Luther's windowless office, having taken Bogo's instruction to make sure the wolf had everything he needed and concluded that nobody needs fluorescent lighting; the lamp is his own selection. When Luther moves off toward the bullpen, Nick hangs back at the desk to say quietly that Luther is nervous, and Clawhauser answers just as quietly that he knows — that is why he made the sign.

At Deersneyland ("Day Pass") he holds Bogo to a promise about the spinning teacups, then drags the chief of police away by the arm while calling back a recommendation about the churros — much to Bogo's mortification.

He blows Luther's birthday to a full bullpen ("Operational Surprise") while trying to say he is glad the wolf is alive, having seen the date while updating emergency contacts, and the party grows out of that slip. Later, at the party itself and quieter than usual, he starts to apologize for it; Luther thanks him instead, for setting in motion events he would never have arranged himself.

Season 5: The Icener Crisis

The Precinct 1 bombing ("Strike") hits Clawhauser hard. Chief Bogo spots the bomber's wrong posture, kills him, and physically throws Clawhauser to safety before the van detonates — but the blast still leaves Clawhauser traumatized, covered in someone else's blood, unable to speak. At the hospital, Pawbert sits wordlessly beside him until Clawhauser breaks his silence, describing how Bogo deliberately stepped in front of him. Pawbert counsels him through it, passing on something he was told himself: that guilt is real but is not instructions, and that what Clawhauser feels does not get to decide what he does next.

When Chief Bogo returns to the bullpen after his hospitalization ("Complacency"), Clawhauser is the first to start clapping — a loud, genuine, emotional response that breaks the silence and triggers a standing ovation from the entire precinct. He later squeals audibly from three rooms away when Nick announces his promotion to Detective.

He is in the front row at the recovery concert in "Golden Again", already a mess before the music starts, face slick with tears, clutching a light-up wand and mouthing every word. Once the pack starts planning the wedding he turns up to "help" with color swatches, fabric samples and three binders — WILDEHOPPS OPTIONS, PAWTHORNE OPTIONS, and COMBINED VISION BOARD (CRYING EDITION) — crying through every presentation, harder when they settle on lavender and silver, and ugly-sobbing when Pawbert asks him to be part of the ceremony. He insists they are happy tears.

At the double wedding ("Always"), Clawhauser catches the bouquet and cries so hard he has to sit down, Bogo standing over him with a steady hoof on his shoulder.

W-Series

In "Closed File", Clawhauser catches Nick and Judy in the Precinct 1 lobby at end of shift to tell them that Luther left about an hour ago — walked right past the front desk without doing "the Luther nod," a small daily ritual whose absence Clawhauser recognized immediately as a sign that something was wrong. His instinct to flag it, despite not being sure he should, is what sends Nick and Judy to the parking lot where they find Luther sitting in the car, unable to go home alone.

In "Under the Weather", Clawhauser is at the front desk, silent throughout, on the afternoon Nick spends insisting that a fever is only a sneeze. The ninth sneeze of the day lands wet enough to stop a donut halfway to his mouth, and the alarm on his face is the first outside confirmation that what Judy has been counting all day is more than an ordinary cold.

In "Recruit Grumpiski", Clawhauser processes "Bark Grumpiski"'s Academy enrollment with the glitter stamp (off-screen, referenced) and handmakes the glitter-bordered graduation certificate that Friedkin presents to Luther at the ceremony. He appears in person at the close of it, back behind the desk on the Monday morning Miles Mobian — a red fox out of that same graduating class — reports to Precinct 1 for his first shift, and hands over a desk assignment, a locker number, a building access code and a donut he declares mandatory.

In "The Prodigal Son", Clawhauser hands over the letter the episode turns on. He is working the desk with a cruller when Nick and Judy come back through the lobby off a call, and he has plainly been waiting for them: a visitor came in ninety minutes earlier asking for Nick, would not leave a name, and said only that it was personal and that he would know. Clawhauser produces the envelope from under the desk pad and gets a thank-you and a smile in return. The smile is a hustle, and it works on him completely. Judy, standing two steps behind it, is not fooled for a second.

In "SSA", Clawhauser is the lobby gate when Emily Prentiss arrives without an appointment to ask for Luther. He straightens on his stool and reaches for the sign-in log, then looks past the cougar at Nick and Judy, who are on their way out to lunch and have stopped. Judy clears her from across the room and calls him Benjamin doing it, and Clawhauser puts the pen down. The log entry can happen after the fact.

In "Scare Tactics", Clawhauser is the production arm of the haunting Luther spent three months building for Nick, and he works it from behind a handheld camera at the mansion. When every light in the house comes on at once he comes down the stair at a run and delivers the reveal he has been rehearsing for two weeks, naming the show and then naming the fox. He keeps rolling through everything that follows, including the part where Nick's crying turns into laughing. At the debrief he explains that he handled Nick's emergency call himself on a spoofed line: Precinct 1 had the night on the books as a controlled exercise, dispatch was holding under instructions, and no unit would have rolled whatever Nick did. The voices, the doors and Nick's own voice played back at him came off a tablet in the stair hall. The paperwork was preapproved. He finishes the night on the floor by the fire with the camera down, mouthing along to a cartoon theme song.
