S04E02 - Unboxed

"Unboxed" is the second episode of Season 4 of We Can Fix Pawbert. It opens the morning after "Release", on Pawbert's first full day outside Zootopia Correctional Facility. With the pack clearing their schedules to come along, the day is a run of errands aimed at giving him back a legal identity.

Synopsis

On his second day out of prison, Pawbert Lynxley wakes disoriented at Pawthorne Mansion, where Luther Pawthorne brings coffee and a list of errands. Nick Wilde and Judy Hopps take the day off. At the ZID office in Manehatten Union Square, an okapi clerk named Mara voids his release card and issues a temporary ID, then says her brother survived the wall breach as security at the central climate facility. A phone store follows, where Pawbert chooses his own number for the first time and Luther pays. At Furs National Bank, a sheep named Russell opens an individual checking account for his two hundred dollars of gate money; an offer of a second account holder pulls Pawbert into a memory of Milton's financial control until Judy takes his paw. Sorrel, a capybara navigator at Zootopia Reentry Services, hands him a resource packet and a card and says the door is open once he knows what he wants. At a community clinic, Dr. Mato and dentist Suri work only with his consent, and Nick submits to a dreaded cleaning. That evening Luther and Pawbert unpack the storage box, mount a corkboard for Maddie's card, Charles' napkin, and the squad Pawlaroid, and put the heist trophy on the mantel. Nick adds Pawbert to a pack group chat. After the others leave, Pawbert hangs his green sweater in the empty left half of the closet and tells Luther he fears building the wrong life. Luther answers that they will fix it together.

Plot

Pawbert wakes in the master bedroom at Pawthorne Mansion and cannot place the ceiling. The mattress gives instead of resisting, the light comes through fabric rather than a corridor tube, and his paw reaches for a shelf that holds nothing. Luther is in the doorway with two mugs of coffee before the panic finishes arriving. Downstairs, Nick turns up with bakery boxes, and he and Judy admit they have both taken the day off. Luther reads out the schedule, which does not shrink on a second hearing: identification, a bank account, a phone, a medical appointment.

The ZID office at Manehatten Union Square is a hall of plastic chairs and numbered windows. Pawbert draws ticket 867 against a display showing 812 and waits between Luther and Judy while mammals in the hall recognize him and whisper. At Window 14 he hands over his ZCF Release Card, the one that names his inmate number and release date to anyone who asks him for identification. Mara, the okapi clerk, scans it without comment, then tells him quietly that her brother worked night security at the central climate facility during the wall breach and is alive because of what Pawbert and the pack did. She sends him to booth C to be photographed, stamps the release card VOID, files it, and passes back a temporary ZID valid for sixty days, with the permanent one due in seven to ten business days. It carries no inmate number and no release date.

At a phone store downtown, a porcupine salesmammal offers him a randomly assigned number or a list to pick from. Pawbert has never chosen a phone number; his father assigned them, along with everything else. Nick tells him to pick one Milton would hate. When the total comes up, Luther's card is already out.

Nick spends the drive to Furs National Bank warning against Lemming Brothers and the crash that ruined it. Russell, the sheep at the desk, opens an individual checking account and takes Pawbert's two hundred dollars of gate money as the deposit without remark. Then he asks whether Pawbert wants to add a secondary account holder, a partner or a family member, and the word family drops him into a memory of Milton's finances, the joint accounts that meant control and the shared money that meant leverage. Judy has crossed from the waiting area without him noticing. She puts a paw over his under the desk and says nothing until it passes. He takes the individual account and a temporary card.

Zootopia Reentry Services occupies converted office space on a quiet downtown block, the address buried in release paperwork Pawbert has not finished reading. Sorrel, a capybara navigator, takes him into the back alone while the pack waits out front. They cover housing, which is settled, and employment, which is not, and Pawbert admits he no longer knows what he wants. Sorrel hands him a resource packet on the understanding that everything in it is optional, then observes that most mammals who come through are trying to disappear and Pawbert does not read like one of them. He sets a business card on the desk and says ZRS is always looking for mammals who understand the system from inside. Pawbert pockets it without committing to anything.

The community health clinic is furnished for every size of mammal. Tessa, the beaver at reception, hears that Pawbert has no insurance and answers with a sliding scale without missing a beat. Alpina, the llama who takes his vitals, names each step before she performs it and tells him he can stop her at any point. Dr. Mato brings himself down to eye level, says plainly that Pawbert did time and that medical care is hard afterward, and lays out how the exam will work: Pawbert can stop him, take a break, or ask questions before anything happens. Pawbert uses the pause twice, less because he needs it than to prove to himself the option is his to use. The exam finds him healthy with the stress signs anyone would expect, and Mato sends him next door for a dental checkup.

Suri works from a raised platform beside the chair and finds his teeth in better shape than prison dental usually leaves them. Through the glass, Nick can be seen insisting his own teeth are fine. Judy pushes him into the chair anyway. Suri talks him through the cleaning while he grips the armrests and complains that being shot at was quieter, until Pawbert puts a paw on his arm and steadies him with the phrase Luther used that morning. Nick emerges with clean teeth, no cavities, and an appointment in six months.

Back at the mansion that evening, Pawbert's new phone runs low and he has no charger, then no nightstand to keep one in. Luther tells him they share a nightstand and the left side is his, then turns the spiral into a task by taking him upstairs to the storage box. They empty it item by item. Lillian's wallet photo goes on the dresser, and her recipe card is set aside for the kitchen drawer. Luther disappears into the house and returns with a dusty corkboard, which they mount on the wall near the closet; Pawbert pins Maddie's card, Charles' napkin, and the squad Pawlaroid to it in that order. The early album and the STAY notebook go on the shelf by the bed, the notebook unopened. The laminated photo goes on his side of the nightstand. The heist trophy they carry downstairs to the living room mantel, where Nick will have to look at it every time he visits.

Over Luther's pasta, Pawbert says the choices are harder than the bureaucracy. Afterward Nick asks for his new number and adds him to a group chat called Pack Chat, which Judy immediately floods. Nick and Judy leave on foot down the driveway toward transit. Pawbert hangs the green sweater on the empty left side of the closet, and in bed he tells Luther he is afraid of building the wrong thing. Luther says they will fix it, and that whatever Pawbert builds, he will not be building it alone.
