Before the pack leaves the precinct he catches Pawbert in the bullpen and presses a folded napkin on him with the recipe written out in looping script, ingredient by ingredient, with notes in the margins and "NINE-NINE!" jammed into the last of the space along the bottom. Pawbert pins it to his corkboard that night, a small detail that speaks to the impact of Boyle's gesture on a mammal still learning to accept kindness from strangers.
During the Halloween Heist in "The Heist", Boyle joins the Jake/Nick "chaos bros" alliance as emotional support and snack procurement, and then, by a process none of the detectives who watched it can reconstruct, ends up inside a ventilation shaft. He spends most of the night there, shouting inventories of what he can see, and drops out of the ceiling in a cloud of dust immediately after Pawbert wins, having missed the entire finish.
Season 2
A year after their first meeting, the Precinct 99 team returns in "Nine-Nine" when financial records connected to the Clawrence investigation require Pawbert's expertise. Boyle greets the pack with welcome-back muffins made with "cardamom and hope," and volunteers that he has been working on the recipe since the previous year and added a secret ingredient: "MORE hope."
Pawbert reciprocates the warmth by revealing that he kept Charles's napkin from the previous year, pinning it to the corkboard at Site Two alongside other mementos of kindness. This revelation overwhelms Charles entirely — he calls it "the nicest thing anyone's ever done with a napkin" and must be physically restrained from hugging Pawbert. While Pawbert works on deciphering the Lynxley accounting system, Boyle brings him thematically appropriate mushroom risotto to fuel the investigation.
When the Ninety-Nine visits Site Two for the Halloween Heist security audit in "The Audit", Boyle arrives with his emergency charcuterie backpack containing twelve different cheeses. The heist features his signature "cheese emergency" distraction — shrieking about thermal distress when the brie "weeps" near the radiator. The bag also contains napkins with inspirational quotes including "CHEESE BELIEVES IN YOU" and "YOU GOUDA DO THIS."
Unbeknownst to Charles, Pawbert uses him as an unwitting trophy mule, hiding the real heist trophy in his backpack while Holt, allied with him from the start, draws the room's attention elsewhere. Pawbert's reasoning is that Charles would guard his emergency cheese supplies with his life. When the deception is revealed, Charles's reaction is characteristically emotional: "I'm a PATSY! I'm a CHEESE PATSY!" followed by "That's the most beautiful manipulation I've ever been a part of."
When Terry delivers his sincere statement about home security ("Terry came here to make sure his friends are safe"), Charles weeps and vows to record the whole quote in his journal.
Season 5: The Otterdam Heist and Wedding
Charles first appears at Shaw's Bar in "The Network" when Nick calls to propose the heist. He returns with the squad for the Otterdam data heist in "The Job". His first act upon entering Pawthorne Mansion is sprinting for the kitchen, where he discovers his pancake recipe napkin has been framed on the wall behind glass. The discovery reduces him to heaving sobs. During the heist, Charles serves as emotional support and snack provider, bringing Nana Boyle's veggieballs for morale — a Zootopia adaptation of the family recipe. Once the squad is back at the mansion, Jake turns the veggieballs into a tournament over Charles's protests that the secret-recipe batch was never meant for a contest, and Charles ends up competing in it himself. He departs with the squad in "Departure", emotional about leaving and still disputing the result — Terry claims the win on fourteen veggieballs to Charles's twelve, and Charles insists the spicy Indeerian ones count double.
Charles returns with the Nine-Nine for the assault on The Root in "Final Position", stepping out of the lead cruiser behind Jake and Amy at the edge of the Ravine. The squad checks weapons in silence — none of the usual noise, none of the usual jokes — and holds the outer perimeter for the operation.
