"Fieldwork" is the sixth episode of Season 5 of We Can Fix Pawbert. It follows directly on "Traceback", turning the property list recovered from the captured recruiter into the first target ZSI can move on. An overnight pattern search puts a mothballed Lynxley maintenance depot at the center of the network's supply chain, and Luther plans a night raid walled off from ZPD dispatch so that Roskova cannot see it coming.

Synopsis

At 0200, ZSI field agent Shaw finds a pattern in the property data taken from the recruiter Yevgeni. A former Lynxley maintenance depot at 3018 Dry River Road in Hyenahurst, decommissioned on paper forty years ago, has tripled its power draw and takes vehicle traffic at odd hours. Director Costa orders a briefing, and Luther plans a night raid kept off ZPD dispatch so Roskova cannot learn of it in advance. Pawbert reads the Lynxley corporate archives, identifies the depot as a mothballed backup site, and predicts a concealed sub-basement. He coordinates from the Crisis Coordination Center while Luther leads the entry with Nick and Judy, Captain Hoggbottom's Razorbacks, and the Zebros. The raid kills five operatives and takes one alive. Below the main floor are roughly fifty crates of weather wall devices, a communications relay built to old Lynxley emergency broadcast specifications, and manifests headed Iceberg Actual, Icener's call sign, which establishes that he commands the operation and does not merely fund it. Mid-raid, a demonstration attack destabilizes the Tundratown control station. Signals analyst O'Brian traces the control signal to a Canal District fishery rooftop. Luther leaves Shaw holding the warehouse, takes the rest of the team across the city, captures four more operatives, and shuts the attack down fifteen minutes early, the first attack ZSI has actively countered rather than absorbed. Roskova then abandons every staging area within two districts of both sites and orders an arrival moved up to within the week.

Plot

Shaw has held the analysis station in the Crisis Coordination Center since midnight. At two in the morning the device board still moves against her: fourteen found, eleven removed, and the count of newly detected devices climbing twice in the time it takes her to walk back from the coffee station. Working the property list taken from Yevgeni, she isolates six sites bought through layers of shell companies over three years, all within a short walk of the Sahara Square control stations and all showing recent spikes in power usage. One address holds her. 3018 Dry River Road in Hyenahurst is a Lynxley maintenance depot decommissioned on paper four decades ago, positioned to service all six, with an electrical draw that has tripled in the past month and aerial passes showing at least four different vehicles calling at regular intervals. Costa reads it as a staging area and the first real break in weeks, and sets a briefing with Luther for 0800.

The briefing room is standing room only. Luther lays out a night breach: he takes the primary entry with Nick and Judy, Hoggbottom and her Razorbacks take the loading dock, and the Zebros, Officers Gene Zebraxton and Gene Zebrowski, hold the east side as the flanking element. Pawbert will coordinate from the Crisis Coordination Center with the building schematics and the Lynxley corporate archives open in front of him. He confirms the address from those archives and corrects the room's assumption about the building: it was never empty, only kept on a minimal utility draw by someone waiting for a use for it. Because Roskova has not been seen since she vanished into the Tundratown market, the operation runs off ZPD dispatch entirely, through a small pool of officers Costa cleared with Chief Bogo. Nick tells Judy twice that keeping their own people in the dark feels wrong.

That afternoon at Pawthorne Mansion, Pawbert works the archives on the couch while Luther brings him tea. The depot belonged to a secondary backup network for the weather walls, mothballed rather than demolished, and standard Lynxley protocol puts a concealed sub-basement below the main floor, storage his family kept out of the public record. Pressed on how he feels about the night ahead, Pawbert admits he is worried about the operation, about being six years behind a network they only just learned existed, and about Luther walking into a building full of armed operatives. He asks Luther to come back. Luther answers with their anchor word.

The breach goes at 2200. Pawbert runs it from an analyst station, calling four thermal signatures clustered on the main floor and talking Luther toward the sub-basement access behind the east-wall electrical panels. The entry draws fire immediately. Luther, Nick, and Judy push the center while the Razorbacks come through the loading dock and the Zebros seal the exits, and three operatives go down on the main floor. A fourth, an arctic fox, is caught reaching for the east-wall panel and is wounded and disarmed. Pawbert talks Luther onto the manual override lever that bypasses the keypad, and the floor hatch opens onto a staging area that appears on no official record: dozens of identical crates holding the same weather wall devices CTU has been stripping out of stations, and a purpose-built encrypted communications relay in the corner. Two more operatives fight from cover and are killed. Pawbert identifies the relay as built to Lynxley emergency broadcast specifications, which means someone has had access to his family's old technical documents. Judy turns up shipping manifests and scheduling logs headed "Iceberg Actual," Icener's call sign, on every page and against every approval signature: proof that he runs the network rather than merely bankrolling it.

Costa cuts in before the haul can be catalogued. The Tundratown control station cleared the previous week is destabilizing, and the temperature swings threaten ice road failures across the northern district within twenty minutes. O'Brian follows the control signal through its obfuscation to a transmission point on the Canal District waterfront where someone is steering the attack live, and both she and Pawbert conclude the position has to be elevated. Luther leaves Shaw and inbound ZSI tactical holding the warehouse and takes the rest of the team across the city to an abandoned fishery. Hoggbottom goes through the ground floor from the front and takes two operatives, with Truffler pushing through a graze to the shoulder. Luther, Nick, and Judy climb to the roof, where two more are working portable transmission equipment. A tundra tiger goes down as he turns. Nick shoulder-checks a musk ox away from the console before he can wreck it, Luther puts two rounds into his leg, and Judy has the cuffs on him while he is still processing the pain. O'Brian reaches the equipment remotely and kills the attack, and the Tundratown station returns to baseline fifteen minutes before the attackers meant to shut it down themselves.

At the debrief, Shaw reports five operatives captured across the two sites, three of them wounded, and the rest killed. The prisoners are compartmentalized and know only their own assignments, trained to give up nothing else. O'Brian reports that the Hyenahurst relay is talking to a vessel and coordinating arrivals and logistics, and Costa makes cracking the encryption her priority and orders Bauer to put CTU teams on every compromised station at 0600. Walking out afterward, Judy says the night felt different, that they were not just reacting. Luther holds it to one battle. Pawbert calls it a start.

At the mansion at 0300, Luther is out of tactical gear and drinking water at the kitchen counter when Pawbert comes down in the flannel pajamas Luther bought him a year ago. Luther credits the sub-basement intelligence with saving twenty minutes of searching and tells him the desk work directly changed the operation. Pawbert deflects, then admits it felt like they were ahead of the network for once, like they might be able to stop it. Luther tells him they will, because they have something the network does not.

In a windowless Tundratown safehouse, Roskova counts the red crosses on her map of the city while a young polar bear lieutenant reports the night's losses. She already knows most of it; the signal cut told her the moment it happened. She draws a line through Hyenahurst and another through the Canal District, orders every staging area within two districts of either site abandoned and the inventory moved to tertiary caches that were never on Yevgeni's list, and accepts weeks of installation delay because it costs ZSI more momentum than it costs her. She has the lieutenant tell Icener the timeline has changed, then makes a call of her own to move the timetable up: not the installation schedule, but Icener's arrival, which she wants inside the week.
