S02E19 - The Crown

"The Crown" is the nineteenth episode of Season 2 of We Can Fix Pawbert and a crossover with Reacher. It follows directly from Tempest, with Pawbert held inside the Central Weather Interface and Clawrence Lynxley setting up a camera. As ZPD and ZSI converge on the facility, Clawrence puts his nephew in frame and makes him an offer in front of the entire city.

Synopsis

Clawrence Lynxley prepares a live broadcast from the Central Weather Interface control room and tells his captive nephew Pawbert Lynxley why the prison attacks happened: they were probes of the correctional facility's security, run in preparation for a breakout of Milton, Cattrick, or Kitty. When the maximum security wing held, Clawrence settled on Pawbert instead. As ZPD units and Reacher's ZSI team converge, Luther enters by the roof and a ventilation shaft while Reacher breaches the service entrance with Nick and Judy. On camera, Clawrence explains that Milton keyed the facility's master override to family voiceprints and that the console will only accept a living speaker. The activation phrase is Pawbert's mother's name, and Clawrence offers him rule over Zootopia for speaking it. Pawbert refuses. Luther drops through the vent, the breach team storms the room, and Reacher kills the enforcer Javier Croft in close quarters after taking a knife wound to the side. Clawrence holds Pawbert at gunpoint as a shield and fires when Pawbert strikes at him. The shot goes wide; Luther tackles Pawbert to the floor as Clawrence fires again, and the second round hits Pawbert's shoulder. Neagley and Dixon take Clawrence alive. Pawbert survives surgery with Luther at his bedside, and Mayor Winddancer tells the press that Pawbert chose the city over power.

Plot

Clawrence Lynxley's crew rigs the control room of the Central Weather Interface for a live broadcast while Pawbert waits restrained. Javier Croft watches him from the door, and the margay he fought at the precinct guards the secondary exit. Clawrence tells his nephew what the prison attacks were really for. The yard, the kitchen, the shower: none of it was an attempt on his life. They were probes of Zootopia Correctional's security run in preparation for a breakout, and Milton, Cattrick, or Kitty would each have served the purpose. The maximum security wing held against every attempt and locked down harder afterward, so Clawrence changed targets. Pawbert had three guards instead of a fortress and a schedule anyone could learn. A raccoon operative reports ZPD units converging and ZSI tactical inbound, and Clawrence moves the broadcast up.

Luther drives the ZSI vehicle downtown with Nick checking weapons beside him and Judy on comms in the back. Agent Ross relays that Downtown ZPD has already engaged at the facility perimeter and is holding the loading bay under fire, that Reacher's team is a minute behind them, and that Clawrence holds both the high ground and the hostage. Judy picks up a broadcast signal leaving the building.

The perimeter is a firefight when they arrive. Two ZPD officers are dead near the entrance and a third is being dragged to cover. Sergeant Hornwell, a rhino with an untreated graze on her arm, tells Luther her unit lost two officers trying to push in, and puts the hostile count at a dozen or more, professional and carrying military-grade weapons. Reacher's vehicle arrives behind them and he splits the approach: Neagley, Dixon, and O'Donnell breach the main corridor from the service entrance, Nick and Judy go with him, and Luther takes the roof and the ventilation shaft. The door goes when Luther goes.

Luther climbs the roof stairwell alone under emergency lighting, thinking about the year he spent visiting Pawbert on the other side of prison glass and the promise he made there. On the roof he pulls the vent cover free and lowers himself into the shaft.

Clawrence goes live, and every screen in Zootopia carries him. He tells the city that Milton stole thirty years of his work and wrote him out of history, that the facility behind him governs every weather wall in Zootopia, and that all of it runs through him now. He calls it a correction of the record rather than revenge, then turns to bring Pawbert into frame, restrained, and says his nephew is going to help him. Ross confirms over comms that Pawbert is alive. At City Hall, Mayor Winddancer watches with his emergency staff in silence.

On camera, Clawrence explains the lock. Milton keyed the master override to family voiceprints, his own and his children's, a measure he designed after his brother disappeared, and Pawbert's enrollment was kept current until shortly before his arrest. The console tests for a live speaker, so recordings and synthetic voices both fail at the microphone and the three decades of family tape Clawrence holds are worth nothing. The phrase is Lillian Lynxley, Pawbert's mother's name. Clawrence offers him rule over the city for the price of saying it into the terminal: a crown that would make him untouchable and put a stop to anyone calling him weak. He dismisses the pack as mammals who could not keep him out of prison or stop a kidnapping from a police station. Pawbert thinks about his mother, about Nick and Judy somewhere below him, about Luther coming for him, and about the forty-one mammals already dead. He refuses.

Ross orders the breach. Clawrence draws his pistol, hears metal shift in the vent above him, and drags Pawbert in front of him as a shield. The vent cover blows outward, Luther drops into the room, and the broadcast cuts to static.

The corridor door blows inward behind him. Reacher fills the doorway. Nick and Judy split to opposite angles, Neagley and Dixon push in after them, and O'Donnell holds the corridor. Nick tackles the margay, Judy drops the weasel camera operator, Neagley strips the porcupine's sidearm, and Dixon puts the raccoon on the floor. Javier opens Reacher's forearm on his first pass, then circles away from the bear rather than at him, keeping the largest server rack between them and spending his speed carefully. Reacher stops chasing angles and tears the rack off its mounting bolts, leaving forty feet of open floor. Javier goes forward instead of back, inside the bear's reach, and buries the knife three inches into his side below the vest before a swung forepaw sends him into a console. With every other operative down or zip-tied, Clawrence backs to the far wall dragging Pawbert, pistol at the lynx's temple, and orders weapons down. Luther holds his shot, because Clawrence needs Pawbert alive and every mammal in the room knows it. When Javier drops knife-first from the overhead cable trays, Reacher catches him out of the air, slams him into the tile and breaks his neck. He is bleeding from three wounds by the time he stands up.

Clawrence gives Pawbert a last chance and shifts the pistol from his head to his shoulder, meaning to wound him into cooperating. Pawbert swings both bound paws into his jaw with everything Officer Kett drilled into him in prison, and the shot goes wide into a control panel. Clawrence reaims, Luther tackles Pawbert to the ground, and the second round hits Pawbert's shoulder. Luther gets both paws over the wound while Pawbert tells him he did not say her name. Neagley and Dixon converge from opposite sides before Clawrence can fire again and cuff him on the floor. Judy calls the medevac. Luther refuses to be separated from the stretcher and rides the ambulance to Zootopia General. Across the loading bay a second medic team wraps Reacher's forearm, gives up on the stretcher, and lets him seat his own pressure dressing before he goes back to watching the perimeter. Inside, a ZSI analyst starts resetting the authentication protocols so the phrase cannot be used again.

Winddancer addresses the press at City Hall with the moment of the refusal playing on the screens behind him. He tells the city that Pawbert Lynxley chose Zootopia over power, that he refused to speak the phrase that would have handed his uncle the weather walls, and that he was shot for it. At Zootopia General, a deer doctor still in her surgical cap tells Luther the bullet came out cleanly without fragmenting and missed the major arteries, and that Pawbert should recover fully after physical therapy for the shoulder. Luther sits at the bedside while Pawbert is still under, the green sweater folded on a chair beside him, torn and bloodstained, set aside rather than cut away. Nick and Judy wait in the hallway outside.
