Downtown
Downtown is Zootopia's central business district: office towers above older commercial blocks, and a street grid that gets no tourist traffic. It is where Pawbert rebuilds an ordinary life after prison, out of a field placement at Zootopia Reentry Services, a coffee shop job and a bar on a side street. It also holds the facility through which every climate control system in Zootopia is routed, which is what brings the Lynxley family back to the district.
Description
Downtown occupies the center of the city and shares a border with Savanna Central, close enough that Otterdam and Vole Gardens are claimed by both districts and the Lions Tail waterway is credited to the pair of them. The two look different from a train window: Savanna Central's glass towers give way to Downtown's older building stock, which carries high-rises of its own scattered through it. The district's climate is plain urban temperate, without the engineered extremes the weather walls hold in place in Tundratown and Sahara Square.
Near the transit stations Downtown is quick and polished. Coffee carts and newsstands work the exits, a busker plays at the top of the stairs, and the crowd moves at commuter speed. A few blocks out the buildings age and the storefronts lose their finish, and the district turns into its working half: dry cleaners, lunch counters setting up for the rush, pharmacies, a florist stall wedged between larger shops, a Safewhey grocery two blocks past the station. Older still are the side streets, where a bar door sits among laundromats, tailors, repair shops and a used bookstore.
Downtown is built to the same size-scaled standard as the rest of Zootopia, in traffic lanes and crossings and platforms that fit everyone at once. A giraffe and a family of mice can share a corner without either party finding it remarkable. At night the traffic drops off without disappearing, and most of what is still moving is working a late shift or delivering something.
The ZTA serves the district through nine stations: Flock Street, Fruit Market, Herd Street, Hill Street, Lionheart Avenue, Pack Street, Peak Street, Trip Street and Troop Street. Peak Street is the depot and interchange for the Zootopia Loop, the Inner Loop and the Peak Street Spur. The Downtown 3 service runs in from Rainbow Falls in the Meadowlands, and Troop Street is the stop announced on the approach.
Notable Locations
- Zootopia Reentry Services โ a converted office building on a quiet corner, identified by nothing more than a door and a small nameplate. The absence of signage is a choice, and it lowers the threshold for a client arriving cold.
- Snarlbucks โ the chain's Downtown branch, on the corner of Pack and Flock, three blocks from ZRS and halfway along the walk to the transit station.
- The Watering Hole โ a bar on the corner of Pack and Trip, on a side street of older storefronts, and the standing after-work spot of the Snarlbucks crew.
- Central Weather Interface โ the building through which every climate control system in the city is routed, master overrides included. It is wedged between taller neighbors and built not to draw attention until something fails.
- The parole office โ a drab government building in an uninteresting stretch of the district, furnished to match. Murray Burrows takes his supervision check-ins here.
- Peak Street station โ the district's ZTA depot and its largest interchange.
History
Season 1
In "The Architect", Nick and Judy come out of a Downtown coffee shop to walk off the gala operation, tired enough that neither checks behind them. A raccoon in a delivery uniform has been standing at a crosswalk without any intention of crossing. He follows them corner to corner, watches them turn onto Pack Street and go in through a front door, and phones in the address: 86 Pack Street, the safehouse. Oxbow, running an assault team out of a windowless room, takes the report and puts the assault at three in the morning. It is the district's first scene in the series.
By "Home" the district has become a place to avoid. Planning the shopping trip that gets Pawbert out of the safehouse for the first time, Nick and Judy route around the downtown core, on the reasoning that recognition is likeliest where the crowds are thickest.
Season 2
Downtown is where Clawrence's campaign ends. The Central Weather Interface is what Cattrick gives up through visitation glass in "Tempest": a facility his father took both sons to see as children, and one the family regarded as the seat of its power. Clawrence takes the building, brings Pawbert to it bound in the back of a van, and sets up to broadcast.
The assault on the facility runs through "The Crown". Downtown ZPD units reach it first and hold a perimeter at the loading bay from behind vehicles and barricades, exchanging fire with Clawrence's operatives and taking casualties. Luther drives the ZSI tactical vehicle in through the downtown streets with Nick getting into a tactical vest one-pawed beside him and Judy on comms in the back seat, and further ZSI units and Reacher's team converge on the same address for a joint breach. The ambulance that leaves afterward carries its casualty out through the same streets toward Zootopia General.
Season 4
Pawbert's release is mapped onto the district. Before he leaves ZCF in "Release", Dr. Venn, who has run his sessions for two years, hands him a referral to a therapy practice in the district and attaches no obligation to it. Two days later, in "Unboxed", he rides through the district in the passenger seat of Luther's car and tells Nick that he feels like a tourist, opens a phone account under a new number, and walks into ZRS as a client. His supervision check-ins with Burrows begin the day he is released and continue at the district's parole office, which "Transfer Credit" places here.
The commute becomes his own in "Solo Shift", when he rides the Downtown 3 in alone for his first day as a trainee, comes up out of the station into the noise and the smell of coffee, and walks the blocks to ZRS as the streets get quieter and older around him. He walks the same route back at the end of it and stops at a florist stall, where an elderly chinchilla sells him a jade plant for twelve dollars and remarks that stubbornness is what counts, with no idea who she is saying it to.
That walk carries the rest of the season. In "Tips" the hiring sign in the Snarlbucks window catches him at the halfway point between ZRS and the station, and after his trial shift he goes past the station with tips in his pocket to a grocery two blocks further on and buys the four green mugs. In "Radio Silence", with Luther unreachable, Lane walks him off the main street at cheetah speed and in through the door of The Watering Hole, and he walks back to the station that night having stayed out far longer than the hour he had agreed to. He works his last shift behind Grande Station in "Full Circle" and hangs the apron up on the same day his placement ends.
Season 5
Season 5 opens on the district looking unremarkable, which is the point. In "Golden Age" Pawbert leaves ZRS into a softening afternoon and walks Downtown in the golden hour, collecting a wave through the Snarlbucks window from Lane, a smaller one from Brim, and a raised hoof from Selma, who comes out from behind the counter to see him. He passes a newsstand carrying a park renovation, a farmers market and the lowest crime figures in fifteen years, and waits out a crosswalk with everybody else. He is back at the Snarlbucks tables in the afternoon lull of "Pattern Recognition".
The district also shows up in the rebuilding. In "The Godfather", Gary walks Pawbert through six years of work at Reptile Ravine and leads with the new transit hub, which connects the Ravine to Downtown. When the closing aerials of "Always" sweep the city, Downtown is one of the nine districts the camera passes over.
W-Series
Downtown recurs in the background of post-series cases. A juror in "Twelve Angry Mammals" carries a robbery from four years earlier into the deliberation room: three masked mammals in his Downtown shop after closing, gone again inside four minutes, and it shapes how he reads the defendant in front of him. In "Nighthowler", with Luther drugged and running, Garcia tracks him on camera crossing into the Downtown fringe and threading the emptied blocks near the transit hub, until the coverage thins and he vanishes into the green belt at the Rainforest District line. A subway plaza in the district is among the last places anyone sees him.
